Bao Tai Yin Shou: Source Examples, Life Stages and the Fetal Origin

Bao Tai Yin Shou is a short classical discussion pairing certain day/hour positions with Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) in the month. Its gestation imagery concerns a traditional category, not pregnancy. The listed examples do not all match one stage in the common life-stage table, so the source list and the calculated stages should be separated.

What stages do the four source examples actually have?

The declared convention moves Yang stems forward and Yin stems backward, with Birth at Si for Geng, Zi for Xin, Yin for Bing and Wu-Horse for Yi. Three examples fall at Extinction; Bing-Shen falls at Illness. None falls at Gestation under this convention.

Both the Siku edition and the parallel Gujin Tushu Jicheng text list Bing-Shen. It is retained without silently replacing the Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) or presenting the short list as a universal catalogue.

Source pillarDeclared Birth anchorCalculated stage
Geng-YinGeng at Si, forwardExtinction
Xin-MaoXin at Zi, reverseExtinction
Bing-ShenBing at Yin, forwardIllness
Yi-YouYi at Wu-Horse, reverseExtinction

What additional condition does the passage ask for?

It proceeds from the listed positions to Resource in the month, authority feeding Resource and timing support. Earth is Resource for Geng/Xin, Wood for Bing and Water for Yi. Finding a listed pillar does not establish those additional conditions.

For example, Yin beneath Geng contains Jia Indirect Wealth (a traditional role associated with opportunities, exchange and wider connections), Bing Killings and Wu Indirect Resource (a traditional role associated with specialized learning and unconventional insight). The branch is not empty. Extinction is a stage label, not proof of no support or a hopeless life.

Are bao tai, the Gestation stage and Tai Yuan identical?

No. Bao tai is wording in this old pattern name. Gestation is one defined position in the twelve-stage sequence. Tai Yuan is a separate auxiliary pillar derived from the birth Month Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth month). They have different inputs and uses.

An interpretation claiming that Tai Yuan directly identifies this pattern needs to state its source and explain how the four examples fit. An unstated connection is not a rule supplied by the passage.

Should the words Illness, Extinction or Gestation worry me?

These names do not measure health, fertility, a fetus or lifespan. A Day-Pillar label is not a medical result or a reason to judge yourself negatively.

The page helps you identify the table a reading uses, the relations you can check and the parts that remain textual or interpretive questions. Stating the mismatch is more reliable than inventing certainty.
