Ten God combinations: how BaZi roles work together
Ten God combinations describe how several roles in a BaZi chart generate, restrain or combine with one another. Direct Officer alone carries traditional associations with rules and obligations. Officer generating Resource adds a relationship: restraint connects to the Day Master through a source of support. Reading the connection tells you more than simply collecting another favorable or unfavorable label.
Translate the name into a relationship
Every role is relative to the Day Master. Take Jia Wood as a partial example, not a complete birth chart: Water generates Wood, so Ren and Gui are Resource; Wood generates Fire, so Bing and Ding are Output; Wood controls Earth, making Wu and Ji Wealth; Metal controls Wood, making Geng and Xin Officer or Seven Killings. For Yi Wood the element directions stay the same but the specific polarity-based roles change.
Generates describes a generating relationship, controls describes restraint, and combines requires a particular stem pairing. These are different operations. Wealth generating Officer does not mean money buys a position: it means the Wealth element generates the Officer element.
| Combination | Partial example for Jia | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Officer–Resource | Xin Metal → Gui Water → Jia Wood | Officer generates Resource, which supports the Day Master |
| Eating God controls Seven Killings | Jia generates Bing Fire; Bing controls Geng Metal | Output restrains Seven Killings |
| Hurting Officer meets Officer | Ding Fire controls Xin Metal | Restraint between these two roles |
| Wealth generates Officer | Wu/Ji Earth → Xin Metal | Wealth supplies a generating relationship |
| Output generates Wealth | Jia → Bing/Ding Fire → Wu/Ji Earth | Expression connects the Day Master to Wealth |
Present symbols are the beginning of a pattern reading
Coexistence establishes the ingredients. An effective relationship also needs strength and contact. An established pattern is a further judgment under a particular method of reading the whole chart. Jia meeting Bing and Geng identifies Eating God and Seven Killings; if Bing is weak and Geng well rooted, the name alone cannot establish effective control.
The month supplies seasonal and pattern context, roots help assess each role’s support, and Day Master strength concerns its capacity within the model to sustain output or restraint. Traditional pattern methods distinguish an Eating God pattern using Wealth from a Wealth pattern using Eating God. The same roles can have different jobs depending on the organizing structure.
Visible, hidden and separated roles need different readings
Visible stems make a relationship easier to identify directly. Hidden stems require listing the branch contents before asking about exposure, roots and other contacts. For Jia, Shen contains Geng, Ren and Wu: Seven Killings, Indirect Resource and Indirect Wealth. Calling Shen only Seven Killings because its principal element is Metal loses two roles.
Distance is not a universal numerical discount. Adjacent stems, intervening symbols and binding can alter how the same ingredients interact. Ziping Zhenquan explicitly discusses combinations that do not function as expected. Recognizing a pair neither proves transformation nor removes the original symbols from the chart.
Generation and restraint each have a purpose
If Seven Killings is excessive and Eating God moderates it, restraint is the needed relationship. If Direct Officer has an important role and excessive Hurting Officer disrupts it, restraint has a different implication. Favorability starts with what needs support or moderation, not whether the combination’s name sounds pleasant.
Officer–Resource is often used as an image for standards and learning; Output–Wealth for expression and results. These are modern uses of traditional symbolism. They can prompt reflection on how you work, but do not establish an occupation, a financial outcome or a relationship result. A useful explanation separates symbolism from real-world evidence.
A timing combination has a time boundary
A natal chart (the chart calculated for the birth moment) with Jia and Geng may acquire Bing through a cycle or year. Eating God controlling Seven Killings then becomes a question about that period. The incoming branch, existing roots and other contacts matter too; one visible Bing does not establish ten identical years.
A practical reading sequence is to identify the Day Master and exact roles, trace one relationship, inspect season, roots and position, and then separate natal conditions from timing. Before moving to a detailed guide, you should be able to explain who acts on whom and why that relationship matters here.
