BAZI KNOWLEDGE BASE
What Are the Twelve Life Stages in BaZi? Complete Lookup and Reading Order
The Twelve Life Stages form a cyclic lookup: which stage does a selected Heavenly Stem reach at a selected Earthly Branch? The table can establish a position and sequence, but one label cannot determine fortune, health, lifespan, work or relationships.
The Twelve Life Stages relate one stem to one branch
Choose a reference stem, then move through Birth, Bathing, Crowning, Official, Emperor, Decline, Illness, Death, Tomb, Extinction, Embryo and Nurture across the branches. This guide explicitly uses forward motion for Yang stems and reverse motion for Yin stems. Historical texts debate the Yin-stem convention, so a different convention requires a different complete table rather than selective results.
Keep the reference stem, target branch, convention, chart position and time layer. A branch or a bare Emperor or Death label is insufficient to reproduce the calculation.
Complete Twelve Life Stage table for all Ten Stems
Find the stage down the first column and the reference stem across the top. Their intersection gives the target branch. Jia, for example, has Birth at 亥, Emperor at 卯, Death at 午 and Extinction at 申. Yi runs in reverse: Birth at 午, Emperor at 寅, Death at 亥 and Extinction at 酉.
| Stage | 甲 | 乙 | 丙 | 丁 | 戊 | 己 | 庚 | 辛 | 壬 | 癸 |

Why can a chart show two different rows of Life Stages?
A common Star Fortune display fixes the Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) and checks it against the Year, Month, Day and Hour Branches. A common self-sitting display checks each pillar's own stem against the branch below it. Because the reference stem changes, the same pillar can receive different stage labels in the two rows.
Read the product's field definition before interpreting. Day-Stem, self-sitting and timing-stage lookups can all be shown, but each needs its reference and target. Their labels should not be added into one score.
| Display | Reference stem | Target branch | Question answered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Star Fortune / Day Stem across pillars | Fixed Day Stem | Year, Month, Day and Hour Branches | Day Master stage at each branch |
| Self-sitting | Each pillar's stem | Branch in the same pillar | The complete pillar's own stage |
| Timing stage | Declared natal or timing stem | Luck or annual branch | Stage in a temporary layer |
Example: a Jia Day Master meets 亥, 寅, 午 and 申
Suppose the Day Stem is 甲 and the four chart branches are 亥, 寅, 午 and 申. The Jia sequence returns Birth, Official, Death and Extinction. These are Jia's positions relative to four branches; they do not say that the Year creates a birth, the Month grants office, the Day predicts death or the Hour ends future opportunity.
亥, 寅, 午 and 申 still have their ordinary phases, hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol), seasonal roles and direct contacts. Zi Ping strength continues to use that evidence. Life Stages may supplement the description without erasing or overriding it.
| Reference | Target | Stage | Direct evidence still retained |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 亥 | Birth | Water branch, 壬甲 hidden, pillar position |
| 甲 | 寅 | Official | Wood branch, 甲丙戊 hidden, Month Command if relevant |
| 甲 | 午 | Death | Fire branch, 丁己 hidden, contacts |
| 甲 | 申 | Extinction | Metal branch, 庚壬戊 hidden, contacts |
What do the twelve names mean inside the cycle?
The names borrow stages of growth to describe manifestation, maturity, contraction, storage and renewed formation. They are sequence language, not twelve fixed ages or twelve life predictions.
| Order | Name | Technical image used here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Birth (長生) | qi first becoming manifest and beginning to grow |
| 2 | Bathing (沐浴) | newly manifest qi is exposed and still easily disturbed |
| 3 | Crowning (冠帶) | form becoming established, like dressing before taking on a role |
| 4 | Official (臨官) | qi becoming able to take up its function within the cycle |
| 5 | Emperor (帝旺) | the local cycle reaching its fullest point before moving into Decline |
| 6 | Decline (衰) | the first contraction after the local peak while the cycle continues |
| 7 | Illness (病) | qi contracting further after Decline, named through an illness metaphor |
| 8 | Death (死) | activity becoming dormant before Tomb, Extinction, Embryo, Nurture and a return to Birth |
| 9 | Tomb (墓) | completed qi being stored, which also produces the classical storehouse image |
| 10 | Extinction (絕) | the prior movement breaking before new formation begins at Embryo |
| 11 | Embryo (胎) | the first unseen formation after Extinction |
| 12 | Nurture (養) | formation being supported before the cycle returns to Birth |
How do you make the result useful without overreading it?
Record the reference stem and target branch; verify the forward/reverse convention; identify Star Fortune, self-sitting or timing; return to Month Command, roots, hidden stems, Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element) and contacts; then answer only the current question.
Sanming Tonghui explicitly warns that generating and flourishing stages are not automatically favorable, and resting or terminal stages are not automatically unfavorable. A complete reading states supporting and conflicting evidence and what the label cannot establish.
Four common reading errors
- Giving one branch a permanent Birth, Emperor or Death label without choosing a stem.
- Merging Star Fortune and self-sitting outputs or counting the same label twice.
- Treating Emperor as whole-chart strength or Tomb as an automatic Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) Vault.
- Turning Illness, Death, Extinction or Embryo into medical, fertility, lifespan or danger claims.
