What Is Void in BaZi? Complete Six-Xun and Sixty-Jiazi Table

Void, or Kong Wang, comes from the mismatch between ten Heavenly Stems (the ten symbols used in the upper position of each chart column) and twelve Earthly Branches (the twelve symbols used in the lower position of each chart column). After one xun pairs ten stems with ten branches, two branches remain unassigned. Those two are the xun's Void pair—a lookup relative to a complete Jiazi, not literal nothingness.

What do Void and xun mean?

The sixty Jiazi divide into six blocks of ten pairs, each beginning with Jia and ending with Gui. Xun here means a ten-pair block; in a day sequence it spans ten days. It is not a ten-year Luck Pillar (a pair of symbols used to interpret a roughly ten-year period) and does not make the next decade of a life empty.

The Jia-Zi xun runs from 甲子 through 癸酉 and uses the branches 子 through 酉. 戌 and 亥 receive no stem in that block, so 甲子, 乙丑, 丙寅 and the other members share 戌亥 Void. A complete Jiazi comes first; an animal sign or branch alone cannot determine it.

Complete table of six xun and all sixty Jiazi

Find the complete reference pillar in the middle column, then read the two omitted branches in its row. This page defaults to a Day-Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) reference. A Year-Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth year) method needs a separate labeled result rather than a merged Year-and-Day set.

Three steps from the Day Pillar to actual Void matches

Verify the complete Day Pillar and day-boundary convention; find its xun in the table; then test actual Year, Month, Hour or declared timing branches against the omitted pair. The Day Pillar is one of its xun's ten members, so its own Day Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-day column) cannot match that same Day-Pillar-derived Void pair.

Two omitted branches do not guarantee two matches in a chart. If neither appears elsewhere, there is no natal match. If birth time is unknown, the Hour Branch's match status remains unknown.

Example: why does Day 丙寅 also have 戌亥 Void?

丙寅 is the third member of the Jia-Zi xun, so it shares 戌亥 Void. If a tested Year Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-year column) is 戌 and Hour Branch is 亥, record two matches. A Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) 未 does not match, and Day Branch 寅 does not match. This partial synthetic example demonstrates lookup without inventing real birth data.

If Year Pillar 甲戌 becomes the reference instead, the result is Jia-Xu xun 申酉 Void. Both calculations can be correct with different anchors, but they must not be silently merged into four supposedly Void branches.

Example Year戌Matches 戌 Void
Example Month未No match
Day寅Member of its own xun, not self-Void

What remains when a branch is marked Void?

Its ordinary phase, hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol), roots, Month-Command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month) role, position and direct contacts remain. A named tradition may use Void to qualify participation or manifestation, but it cannot delete the branch, zero its phase or declare the people and matters associated with it nonexistent.

Sanming Tonghui also warns that substance can remain within emptiness and that Void should not immediately be judged adverse. Filling, clash and combination each require their own participants and school conditions; they are not universal cancellation buttons.

Can Void determine relationships, money, health or timing?

Not by itself. Void proves no missing partner, absent parent, childlessness, unemployment, poverty, disease, accident or death. Release from Void guarantees no outcome either. Real decisions require real evidence.

The useful reading records the complete reference Jiazi, xun, omitted pair, actual matching positions and adopted method. Readers can then see where the term comes from and whether later interpretation skips necessary conditions.
