What Is a BaZi Pattern? Ten Ordinary Patterns Explained
A BaZi pattern organizes relationships within a chart. Ordinary patterns usually begin with the month in relation to the Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference). A pattern is neither a complete personality label nor a ranking of lives; it should make the reading’s starting point and next questions clear.
Why discuss patterns after elements and the Ten Gods?
Elements describe generation and control; Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element) name those relations relative to the Day Master. Patterns ask which relation organizes the reading and how others support or obstruct it. Knowing the roles comes before understanding their interaction; counting names is insufficient.
Jia in a You month can begin with hidden Xin Direct Officer. Xin generating Water Resource, which generates Jia, then opens the Officer–Resource discussion. The pattern name starts an explanation rather than ending it.
What do the ten ordinary patterns describe?
This is the library’s reading arrangement. Classical systems may group Direct and Indirect Wealth (a traditional role associated with opportunities, exchange and wider connections) or Resource together and treat Lu and Blade separately. Ten is not a universal taxonomy. The imagery explains concepts rather than testing occupation or personality.
| Pattern | Starting relation | Main reading question |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Officer / 正官 | Controls self, opposite polarity | How are responsibility and order supported? |
| Seven Killings / 七杀 | Controls self, same polarity | How is pressure restrained or redirected? |
| Direct Wealth / 正财 | Controlled by self, opposite polarity | Do resources and capacity fit? |
| Indirect Wealth / 偏财 | Controlled by self, same polarity | How are circulating resources coordinated? |
| Direct Resource / 正印 | Generates self, opposite polarity | Can support and learning be used? |
| Indirect Resource / 偏印 | Generates self, same polarity | Do absorption and output work together? |
| Hurting Officer / 伤官 | Generated by self, opposite polarity | How does expression meet results and rules? |
| Eating God / 食神 | Generated by self, same polarity | Where does sustained output go? |
| Yang Blade / 羊刃 | Adopted Blade position in month | How is concentrated force directed? |
| Jian Lu / 建禄 | Day Master’s Lu position in month | What route follows rootedness? |
Where should you start with your own chart?
Find the Day Master and solar-term Month Branch, then identify its hidden stems relative to the self. Check which month qi was selected, whether it is exposed and rooted, and how generation, control, branch contacts and competing candidates affect it. Mixed-earth months, Lu/Blade months and exposure priority need a stated method.
Separate the candidate name, the supporting relations actually present and unresolved conditions. Roles elsewhere can matter, but replacing the month basis requires an explanation.
How do a role, a combination and a pattern differ?
“Has Direct Officer” identifies Xin’s relation to Jia. “Officer–Resource flow” also needs Officer generating Resource and Resource supporting self with effective participants. “Officer Pattern” additionally needs its selection basis. These claims can overlap without being interchangeable.
Likewise, Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) and Resource coexisting does not mean Wealth directly generates Resource; a Blade marker does not establish a month Blade Pattern, and an Hour Lu is not month Jian Lu. These distinctions reveal skipped steps in a reading.
What is useful here, and can a pattern decide work or life?
It first helps you understand the logic of a traditional reading rather than memorize Officer, Wealth and Resource labels. Responsibility, resources, support, expression and boundaries can also prompt reflection; actual life determines which descriptions fit.
A pattern alone cannot decide occupation, wealth, relationships, health or personal standing. Formation does not guarantee success and breakage is not a bad life. A reading containing only occupations or fortune claims, without month evidence and specific relations, has not explained its pattern.
Why do reports give different pattern names?
First compare birth inputs, solar-term month and day boundaries; then compare month-qi selection, exposure thresholds, mixed-earth months, Earth’s shared Lu positions and Blade conventions. Useful God (the element or role assigned a key function by a particular interpretation method) can also mean the selected month role or a balancing phase, which changes the wording.
Executive, Warlord, Earner, Venturer, Mentor, Mystic, Maverick and Talent are aliases used by some English interfaces. Read them alongside Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Wealth, Resource and Output (the role family produced by the birth-day element, often interpreted through expression and activity) roles so their occupational tone does not become a test result.
Do standard, ordinary and inner patterns rank people?
These terms commonly distinguish month-centered Ten God methods from configurations with separate conditions. They do not divide people into proper versus ordinary lives. Books differ on grouping the two Wealth or Resource types and on placing Jian Lu, month Rob Wealth (a traditional role associated with shared resources, cooperation and competition) and Yang Blade.
For Officer, establish the month-based selection before examining Wealth feeding Officer, Resource protection or Output interference. Officer anywhere in the chart is insufficient. Ordinary patterns can have complex interactions, while a special name confers no automatic advantage.
