How to Read BaZi Classics: What Twelve Books Offer
BaZi classics do not all present the same set of formulas. Some collect older rules and pattern names; others organize month-based selection, discuss interacting tendencies, or read seasonal conditions by Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column). Their useful role is to explain where a concept comes from and why it is interpreted that way, rather than supply a sentence that decides your life.
Which book addresses the question I have?
This map locates topics rather than ranking accuracy or prestige. Several books address the same subject with different priorities, conditions and commentary.
| Book | Useful entry point |
|---|---|
| Yuanhai Ziping | Ten Gods, hidden stems, pattern names and verses |
| Sanming Tonghui | Sources for varied rules, Nayin, stars and special patterns |
| Di Tian Sui and commentaries | Tendency, roots, control/generation and whole-chart cooperation |
| Ziping Zhenquan | Month selection, Useful God, assistants and rescue |
| Qiongtong Baojian | Different seasonal priorities for a Day Stem |
| Shenfeng Tongkao | Problem/remedy reasoning, critique and cases |
| Mingli Yueyan | Topic-based principles and choices |
| Qianli Minggao | A modern-era teaching sequence, Six Gods and cases |
| Zaohua Yuanyao and commentary | A related seasonal text and its annotation layers |
| Wuxing Jingji | Earlier quotations, Lu Ming references and Nayin layers |
| Yuzhao Dingzhen Jing | Brief rules, commentary, pillar order and direction |
| Lantai Miaoxuan | Named Nayin images and their actual members |
Why can two books give different Useful Gods?
For Jia in You, Ziping Zhenquan’s month approach may call hidden Xin Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) the Useful God and then ask what helps it form. A balancing discussion may call Water Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) useful because it supports Jia. The questions and vocabulary differ before the conclusions do.
Likewise, ask why Fire is wanted: warmth, Output (the role family produced by the birth-day element, often interpreted through expression and activity), control of Metal or another relation? The purpose changes the needed stem, strength and possible obstruction.
Identify who is speaking
A page may contain base text, an earlier note, later commentary, an editor’s note and translation. Explanations marked as Ren’s or Xu’s should retain that attribution. A compiler quoting another source does not make every passage follow one standard.
| Layer | Question it can answer |
|---|---|
| Base text | What the passage proposes |
| Commentary | How this commentator explains, adds to or challenges it |
| Case | How a method is applied to supplied information |
| Modern explanation | How the terminology is clarified and which analogies are new |
How can I make one short passage understandable?
Identify the Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference), month and positions, translate the symbols into actual roles and interactions, then mark conditions and exceptions. Distinguish an account of structure from a claimed life outcome.
Xin being Officer to Jia is a checkable mapping. Concluding that the person must hold public office is a separate claim requiring real evidence. Separating those steps lets you understand the tradition without accepting every historical verdict.
Should conflicting passages be combined into an easier rule?
Check edition, context and commentary first. A single changed stem can switch Officer to Killings, and Year-Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-year column) and Day-Stem examples cannot become one lookup. Keep unresolved differences visible rather than invent a unified formula.
Age, reputation and case counts are not validated accuracy rates. Preserve the conditions and reasoning rather than unsupported judgments of character, wealth or lifespan.
How do I distinguish a variant spelling from a different meaning?
Start with the passage’s reference and definition. Useful God may identify a monthly role or a needed protective, balancing or climate function. Lu can identify a branch position in a stem-Lu lookup or a different layer in Lu–Ming–Shen terminology. Unified labels do not establish identical rules.
Variant spellings can help locate the same name, but Ji (己) is a stem and Si (巳) a branch; they are not interchangeable variants. A changed character can change a pillar or its Nayin. Retain the original wording, edition and adopted reading, checking a scan when needed.
Translations also need the source term. Officer and Resource name traditional relationships rather than prove a literal official or material resource. Distinguish base text, commentary and this guide’s modern explanation.
