Combination with Punishment: Three Stem-and-Branch Examples

In this passage, Combination with Punishment means the two Heavenly Stems (the ten symbols used in the upper position of each chart column) combine while their Earthly Branches (the twelve symbols used in the lower position of each chart column) have a punishment relation. Both contacts can coexist; combination does not automatically cancel punishment. The heading’s clash wording does not expand these examples into every clash-plus-combination arrangement.

What are the stem and branch relations in the three examples?

The first row uses Ji-Mao explicitly present in Gujin Tushu Jicheng, while the Siku transcription reads Si-Mao. Both are disclosed; Ji-Mao is supported by a parallel text rather than only an unsupported guess.

Pillar pairStem combinationBranch relation
Jia-Zi / Ji-MaoJia–JiZi–Mao punishment
Bing-Zi / Xin-MaoBing–XinZi–Mao punishment
Geng-Shen / Yi-SiYi–GengShen/Si in the Yin–Si–Shen punishment group

Can all three pairs be treated as day and hour?

No. Jia’s Mao hour is Ding-Mao, Bing’s Mao hour Xin-Mao and Geng’s Si hour Xin-Si. Only Bing-Zi with Xin-Mao fits that day/hour order. The other pairs can illustrate relations between other positions without being forced into invalid hours.

A valid individual cycle pillar and a compatible Hour Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth hour) under a specific day are separate checks. The source links pillars without assigning one uniform birth-time position.

Does combination plus punishment mean good or bad?

The names first identify relationship types. Their interpretation still needs the affected Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element), positions, strength and competing combinations. Treating combination as good and punishment as bad, then canceling them, does not explain the structure.

Shen and Si also participate in combination and breaking discussions, but do not supply a missing Yin or a complete three-branch punishment set. Stem transformation has separate conditions.

Why are the source’s judgments about people not repeated?

These relations establish no fidelity, morality, addiction, illness or marriage outcome. The source’s negative gendered and behavioral claims are historical opinions, not reliable judgments about a reader.

The useful content is the checkable relations and examples, explaining why a report may mention both combination and punishment without judging a person from those symbols.
