Two Virtues Supporting the Self: Joint Lookup, Shared Targets and Ten Gods
Two Virtues Supporting the Self brings Heavenly and Monthly Virtue into one discussion. The traditional idea connects their markers to useful Wealth, authority, Resource or Output. Start by checking both rules separately, then the actual positions and roles; the name is not a force that removes real-world risk.
How are both Virtues looked up from the Month Branch?
The table uses the common Kun/Shen, Qian/Hai, Gen/Yin and Xun/Si interpretation. Heavenly Virtue includes both stem and branch targets. Search each in its proper column of the chart rather than treating a hidden stem (an additional element symbol traditionally assigned inside a lower chart symbol) as an exposed target.
| Month Branch | Heavenly Virtue target | Monthly Virtue target |
|---|---|---|
| Yin (寅) | Ding (丁) | Bing (丙) |
| Mao (卯) | Shen (申) | Jia (甲) |
| Chen (辰) | Ren (壬) | Ren (壬) |
| Si (巳) | Xin (辛) | Geng (庚) |
| Wu (午) | Hai (亥) | Bing (丙) |
| Wei (未) | Jia (甲) | Jia (甲) |
| Shen (申) | Gui (癸) | Ren (壬) |
| You (酉) | Yin (寅) | Geng (庚) |
| Xu (戌) | Bing (丙) | Bing (丙) |
| Hai (亥) | Yi (乙) | Jia (甲) |
| Zi (子) | Si (巳) | Ren (壬) |
| Chou (丑) | Geng (庚) | Geng (庚) |
Must two different symbols be found?
No. Both targets are Ren in Chen month, Jia in Wei, Bing in Xu and Geng in Chou. One actual stem can meet two lookup rules without becoming two stems or twice the elemental strength.
In Mao month Heavenly Virtue targets Shen while Monthly Virtue targets Jia. Jia without Shen establishes only one of the two markers.
How does a lookup-only example work?
Use the synthetic pillars Jia-Chen, Ding-Chou, Jia-Zi, Geng-Wu solely to illustrate lookup, not a real person. Chou month targets Geng for both Virtues, and Geng appears in the Hour Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-hour column). For Jia, that same Geng is Killings, not Resource or Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) merely because it carries a Virtue label.
The year/month and day/hour pairs are compatible. The example also has an actual Zi–Wu clash, which the two matches do not remove. A supporting interpretation needs additional season, strength and modifying relations.
Why is Monthly Virtue different from its Combination marker?
Monthly Virtue targets Bing, Jia, Ren and Geng across its four month groups. Their Five Combination partners are Xin, Ji, Ding and Yi, used by the separate Combination marker. Xin in a Yin month does not establish the presence of Bing.
The source discusses Virtue, its Combination and Ten God (one of ten traditional relationship labels defined relative to the birth-day element) roles on actual symbols. Separating them clarifies the reading; it does not score morality, health or luck.
