Clashing Lu: Geng-Yin, Jia-Shen and the Xin-Mao Source Example

Clashing Lu is a classical method of invoking an opposite Lu branch through repetition. It differs from an actual clash between two present branches: repeated Yin invokes Geng’s Shen Lu, while repeated Shen invokes Jia’s Yin Lu.

What must be checked in the two main routes?

Another year, month or hour branch (the lower symbol in the birth-hour column) must repeat the Day Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-day column). If the target is already present, read the actual Yin–Shen clash rather than counting a second invoked Lu.

How do the three source cases relate to the opening?

Both texts include these three charts. Geng’s Yin hour is Wu-Yin and Jia’s Shen hour is Ren-Shen, so the first two day/hour pairings are valid. The third is a Xin-Mao day, outside the two days in the opening passage.

Does Xin-Mao justify an unrestricted ten-stem rule?

It shows that the source contains more than two abstract routes: Xin has Lu in You, Mao opposes You and the example has three Mao without You. Xin-Mao hour fits a Xin day, and Jia-Shen month fits a Yi year.

It does not supply every other stem’s count, positions and restrictions. The examples also contain hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) such as Bing in Si and Yin; the named Bing control should not be flattened into a universal ban on every hidden Bing, which would exclude the first chart itself.

Does the word clash predict conflict or change?

Here clash describes an opposite-position theory, not a coming dispute or job move. With only actual repeated Yin, an absent Shen does not create a real Yin–Shen clash.

Comparing the rules and examples helps identify actual branches, hidden stems and inferred targets, rather than accepting a favorable or unfavorable verdict from the name alone.
