Monthly General Supporting Virtue: Middle Qi, Two Virtues and a Source Conflict

The General in this passage chiefly means the monthly General tied to solar position and middle-qi transitions. It is not the usual BaZi General Star or a direct sign of leadership. First distinguish the time systems, then examine the claimed connections to the Virtues and Tian Yi.

How do the two General systems begin differently?

The ordinary General Star takes Zi, Wu-Horse, You or Mao from the year/day branch’s Water, Fire, Metal or Wood trine group. The monthly General instead depends on the solar middle-qi interval.

The BaZi Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) changes at a jie term, while this monthly-General account changes at a middle qi. After Start of Spring but before Rain Water, a Yin month has begun, yet the post–Rain Water Hai General has not.

Which General follows each of the twelve middle qi?

This table organizes the preceding Virtue passage’s sequence with the statement that Hai follows Rain Water. Each interval starts at the named middle qi and ends at the next. A real birth-time lookup needs that year’s transition instant, not a fixed calendar date.

Why does the example still say Chou after Major Cold?

Both texts place the autobiographical example after Major Cold but describe the Sun in Chou. The preceding twelve-month sequence assigns Zi to the twelfth interval. The passage also includes a list beginning with Gong Cao and differs between day and month placement across texts; these are not one unambiguous table.

The example is not silently changed to Zi, nor Major Cold to Winter Solstice. Without fuller textual and calendrical evidence, its monthly-General claim remains unverified.

Which parts of the example remain independently checkable?

The passage gives Geng-Yin day, Chou month, Ren-Wu year and Bing-Xu hour. Bing-Xu is a valid Xu hour for Geng, and Bing is Geng’s Killings. Chou month targets Geng for both Virtues; the Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) itself matches both. Under the Jia/Wu/Geng Chou/Wei Tian Yi convention, Chou is also Geng’s Noble branch.

These facts do not resolve the solar-palace conflict or verify the author’s birth date or office. They illustrate how historical markers were combined, not a basis for hiring, promotion or moral judgment.
