Jing Lan Xie Cha: Three Geng Stems, the Water Trine and Source Variations
Jing Lan Xie Cha uses the image of a well and its Water to discuss Geng with Shen–Zi–Chen. The main passage calls for a Geng-Shen, Geng-Zi or Geng-Chen day, three exposed Geng stems and the complete Water trine, then invokes Ding Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) through an opposing Fire frame.
Why check the three starting conditions separately?
Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day), stem count and branch membership are separate facts. Geng-Shen supplies one Geng and one Shen; additional Geng, Zi and Chen must be found in the actual chart.
| Main condition | What to check | Not a substitute |
|---|---|---|
| One of three days | Geng-Shen, Geng-Zi, Geng-Chen | Unstated extension to every Geng day |
| Three exposed Geng | Actual Heavenly Stems | Hidden Geng in Shen is not another exposed stem |
| All Shen–Zi–Chen | Three distinct Water-trine members | Repeated Shen or Shen–Zi alone |
Why does Water lead to Geng’s Fire Officer in this theory?
Geng’s Ding Officer is carried in Wu-Horse. The source relates Shen–Zi–Chen to opposite Yin–Wu–Xu: Shen opposes Yin, Zi opposes Wu-Horse and Chen opposes Xu. An absent Fire branch remains invoked, not actual Fire content.
Ren is Eating God for Geng while Gui is Hurting Officer; both should not be labeled Hurting Officer. Geng’s Zi hour is Bing-Zi and Shen hour Jia-Shen, exposing Killings and Indirect Wealth respectively; Shen is also Geng’s own Lu. These facts allow other interpretations.
Why do the transmitted cases not prove one strict threshold?
The main account favors no Fire and autumn/winter, while other wording allows Wu-Chen/Wu-Zi despite cautions about Earth controlling Water. The author also questions cited praise of Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) and Yin that conflicts with earlier restrictions. It is not one internally uniform algorithm.
The parallel text adds Geng-Zi, Geng-Chen, Geng-Shen, Ding-Chou: three Geng and all Water-trine branches, but an exposed Ding Officer. It also gives Gui-Wei, Geng-Shen, Geng-Shen, Geng-Chen: three Geng but no Zi. Their calendar pairings are compatible, which does not make them pass every main-passage condition.
When should the actual month and Ten Gods lead?
The passage explicitly points toward Resource in Chen month, Hurting Officer in Zi month, or Flying Lu Ma for repeated Zi. Explaining hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol), support and Output (the role family produced by the birth-day element, often interpreted through expression and activity) first often makes the reading clearer.
The well image does not rank a person. Its useful content is the three-condition check, actual-versus-invoked distinction and explanation of alternative ordinary patterns.
