Wrapped Banner and Pennant: Two Same-Stem Arches to Jie Sha and Wang Shen
Wrapped Banner and Pennant names Jie Sha the banner and Wang Shen the pennant, then invokes their positions through two same-stem arches. Geng-Chen/Geng-Wu flanks Si and Bing-Xu/Bing-Zi flanks Hai. Those branches are not extra natal characters, and one arch alone does not establish both parts.
Where are the two arches in the complete source chart?
Geng-Chen, Bing-Xu, Geng-Wu, Bing-Zi has compatible calendar pairs. The arches use Year/Day sharing Geng and Month/Hour sharing Bing, not necessarily adjacent pillar positions.
| Actual flanks | Complete pair | Invoked middle | Source image |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year / Day | Geng-Chen (庚辰), Geng-Wu (庚午) | Chen — invoked Si — Wu | Jie Sha at Si: banner |
| Month / Hour | Bing-Xu (丙戌), Bing-Zi (丙子) | Xu — invoked Hai — Zi | Wang Shen at Hai: pennant |
Why are Jie Sha at Si and Wang Shen at Hai in this example?
Using Chen Year, the Shen/Zi/Chen group gives Jie Sha at Si and Wang Shen at Hai, matching the two stated targets. Using Wu Day’s Yin/Wu/Xu group reverses them: Jie Sha at Hai and Wang Shen at Si.
The Year-based route should therefore be stated explicitly. Jie Sha is not the Ten God (one of ten traditional relationship labels defined relative to the birth-day element) Rob Wealth (a traditional role associated with shared resources, cooperation and competition), and Wang Shen is not the life stage Death; they are different reference systems.
Can invoked Si and Hai enter the actual chart calculations?
No. The natal branches are Chen/Xu/Wu/Zi, without Si or Hai. Their hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) cannot be added to natal strength or Ten-God counts, nor can their invocation create an actual Si/Hai clash.
The chart does contain Chen/Xu and Zi/Wu clashes. Completing the banner-and-pennant image does not remove them.
What is worth understanding behind this name?
It shows how the source layers same stems, flanking branches and marker lookups into one name. Listing those layers makes actual positions, invocations and lookup results distinguishable.
The attached official and danger narratives are historical interpretations, not evidence for violence, death or character. The checkable construction is the useful part of the entry.
