Following the Child: Output, Continued Generation and Day-Master Strength
In Following the Child, “child” means the element produced by the Day Master: Output, represented by Eating God and Hurting Officer. The child producing another child means Output generates the next element, Wealth. Wood to Fire to Earth is one example. This is a generative relationship, not a statement about literal children, fertility or parenting.
What are the five possible generative chains?
The first step runs from self to Output, the second from Output to Wealth. The table unfolds the element relationships; mere presence of three elements does not qualify a chart.
| Day-Master element | Produced element: Output | Next element: Wealth |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Fire | Earth |
| Fire | Earth | Metal |
| Earth | Metal | Water |
| Metal | Water | Wood |
| Water | Wood | Fire |
Can both Eating God and Hurting Officer participate?
For Jia, Bing is Eating God and Ding Hurting Officer; Wu is Indirect Wealth (a traditional role associated with opportunities, exchange and wider connections) and Ji Direct Wealth (a traditional role associated with managing resources and ongoing responsibilities). Jia produces Bing/Ding Fire, which produces Wu/Ji Earth. Change the reference to Yi and the specific Ten-God labels switch, but Wood–Fire–Earth generation remains.
This illustrates a local relationship. A small unrooted Fire overwhelmed by Water, or Earth unable to receive the flow, does not establish the whole pattern simply because Jia, Bing and Wu appear.
Why shouldn’t this simply inherit the rootless-weakness rule?
Di Tian Sui’s Shunfan discussion explicitly sets aside strength alone as the deciding criterion and distinguishes this account from other following and Hurting Officer readings. Its focus is whether the produced influence continues to generate. The isolation rule for following Wealth or Killings should not be transferred wholesale.
That does not mean ignoring the self. Fellow stems may feed Output; Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) may sustain the self while restraining Output. Their actual place in the chain matters. Neither “any fellow stem forbids it” nor “any Output establishes it” captures the passage.
How is this different from Output patterns and Output generating Wealth?
Eating God and Hurting Officer Patterns primarily concern selection from the month command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month). Output generating Wealth names one interaction between Ten-God groups, which can occur in an ordinary chart.
Following the Child is a whole-chart interpretation centered on an established Output flow that continues onward. Ask whether a reading means a local generation link or an overall organizing flow, then inspect season, roots and interruptions.
What can this concept help you read more clearly?
It offers traditional language for how support feeds output and how output connects onward. A reading may use this as a reflection metaphor for expression or work, but it does not measure talent or prescribe a profession.
The child metaphor does not promise children, and the Wealth endpoint does not promise monetization. A useful explanation makes the chain, its support and its interruptions visible.
