Metal Follows Change: Strong Metal, Si–You–Chou and Refining Fire
Congge, Metal Follows Change, names a traditional Metal-dominant form. “Change” evokes Metal being worked into shape, not a demand to reform one’s personality. Sanming Tonghui discusses both a Metal frame and an appropriate amount of shaping Fire, so “the purer the Metal, with absolutely no Fire, the better” does not summarize this account.
Does the source allow Geng or only Xin?
The Siku prose opens with Geng/Xin days and Si/You/Chou, then discusses seasonal conditions for three particular Xin days: Xin-Si, Xin-You and Xin-Chou. Those examples do not narrow the opening to Xin alone.
Si/You/Chou is the Metal trine; Shen/You/Xu is the western directional meeting. Both may enter discussions of Metal dominance, but they are different groups and should not be substituted in a quotation of this passage.
Why does the passage ask for some Fire but warn against too much?
The prose names one or two Bing, Ding, Si or Wu Fire signals as shaping Metal, while warning that excessive Fire damages it. These include both exposed stems and branch positions; the count is not a universal score detached from season and roots.
An appended verse also warns about mixed Fire. That should not be forced into the same blanket rule as the earlier shaping-Fire account. Explain whether the reading emphasizes moderation into form or elemental purity.
A chart illustration shows the frame and the remaining ingredients
Synthetic illustration: Geng-Shen Year, Yi-You Month, Xin-Si Day and Ji-Chou Hour. Calendar pairings fit. Xin is born in the You month, with Si/You/Chou complete and an additional Shen. It illustrates the configuration, not a verified life outcome.
| Position | Pillar | Hidden stems |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Geng-Shen (庚申) | Geng, Ren, Wu |
| Month | Yi-You (乙酉) | Xin |
| Day | Xin-Si (辛巳) | Bing, Wu, Geng |
| Hour | Ji-Chou (己丑) | Ji, Gui, Xin |
Why does Si contain Fire while belonging to the Metal trine?
Trine membership and hidden stems are different observations. Si belongs to the Metal trine while containing Bing/Wu/Geng. To Xin, those are Officer, Direct Resource and Rob Wealth. Fire and Earth cannot be deleted to make the chart appear pure.
Exposed Yi is Xin’s Indirect Wealth (a traditional role associated with opportunities, exchange and wider connections) and Ji its Indirect Resource (a traditional role associated with specialized learning and unconventional insight). Geng and Yi combine, but that alone does not turn Yi into Metal. Their effects on the dominant configuration and on restraint or temperature still need explanation.
Does Congge tell me which work suits me?
Shaping, standards and refinement help explain the classical image, but they do not identify a modern occupation. Metal abundance does not establish discipline, harshness or management ability.
The useful reading explains why Metal is dominant, whether Fire shapes or disrupts it, and which source account is being applied.
