Inner Yang, Outer Yin: Nayin Elements in the Outer and Inner Pillars
This account places Year and Hour outside, Month and Day inside, then classifies Metal/Water Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) as Yin and Fire/Wood Nayin as Yang. It does not require Yin stems outside and Yang stems inside, nor describe introversion or extroversion. Fix the positions and Nayin layer first.
What can outer Metal/Water and inner Fire/Wood look like?
The synthetic chart Jia-Zi, Bing-Yin, Wu-Chen, Jia-Yin has compatible calendar pairs. The table preserves pillar order while labeling inner and outer positions; it is not a historical source chart.
| Position | Pillar | Nayin | Classification in this account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year | Jia-Zi (甲子) | Sea Metal | Outer: Yin |
| Month | Bing-Yin (丙寅) | Furnace Fire | Inner: Yang |
| Day | Wu-Chen (戊辰) | Great-Forest Wood | Inner: Yang |
| Hour | Jia-Yin (甲寅) | Great-Stream Water | Outer: Yin |
Why is the outside called Yin when every exposed stem is Yang?
Jia, Bing, Wu and Jia are all Yang stems, while Year/Hour Nayin are Metal and Water and therefore outer Yin in this image. Stem polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang) and the passage’s elemental grouping are different classifications.
Wu Day remains Earth even though Wu-Chen has Wood Nayin. The passage also does not assign Earth Nayin to either group, so it should not be expanded into a universal five-element polarity table.
What is the Water Around a Flower Bank arrangement?
The alternate account places Water at Year/Hour and Wood at Month/Day. A compatible synthetic illustration is Bing-Zi, Geng-Yin, Wu-Chen, Jia-Yin, with Water/Wood/Wood/Water Nayin.
| Outer pillars | Nayin | Inner pillars | Nayin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bing-Zi (丙子), Jia-Yin (甲寅) | Ravine Water / Great-Stream Water | Geng-Yin (庚寅), Wu-Chen (戊辰) | Pine/Cypress Wood / Great-Forest Wood |
Does the closing flexibility mean any arrangement qualifies?
The closing line favors a coherent image over rigid placement, but supplies no complete catalogue of acceptable images. A broad reading should remain distinct from the strict Year/Hour and Month/Day distribution.
The entry explains how four positions organize Nayin imagery. Inner and outer Yin/Yang are not assessments of personality, morality or personal worth, nor enough to predict real outcomes.
