Vermilion Bird Riding the Wind: Fire, Water and Their Working Relationship
Vermilion Bird Riding the Wind examines Bing or Ding Fire in relation to Metal and Water. The southern Fire image introduces a discussion of support and restraint. The source begins with Bing-Zi and Ding-Hai, adds four days, and asks for a workable Water–Fire relationship—not merely the presence of both phases.
Which four days accompany Bing-Zi and Ding-Hai?
The first two rows are followed by the four additional days. Gui is Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) and Ren Killings for Bing; for Ding, Ren is Officer and Gui Killings. Water cannot receive one label for both Fire stems.
| Day Pillar | Actual hidden roles |
|---|---|
| Bing-Zi | Gui Officer |
| Ding-Hai | Ren Officer, Jia Direct Resource |
| Bing-Shen | Geng Indirect Wealth, Ren Killings, Wu Eating God |
| Bing-Chen | Wu Eating God, Yi Direct Resource, Gui Officer |
| Ding-You | Xin Indirect Wealth |
| Ding-Chou | Ji Eating God, Gui Killings, Xin Indirect Wealth |
How can Ding-Hai be explained beyond Water meeting Fire?
Ding Fire sits on Hai, containing Ren Officer and Jia Direct Resource. Water controls Fire, while Water–Wood–Fire offers a generating route through Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support). Both can be discussed without first declaring Water an enemy or a favorable marker.
A cold-season chart also raises questions about Fire’s roots, Wood’s support and the other pillars’ warmth. Without the full chart, Ding-Hai establishes those internal relationships, not that the entire chart is balanced.
Does one Shen, Zi or Chen make a Water trine?
No. Shen–Zi–Chen has three members. Bing-Chen supplies Chen alone; repeated Chen does not add Shen and Zi. The Water-group account is an additional configuration, not something built into every listed day.
Ding-You particularly resists a blanket Water description: You contains Xin Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands), with no Water authority. The source also discusses Metal Wealth and support for Fire; that does not add Ren or Gui to You.
Does the metaphor mean equal quantities or an easy life?
Neither. Season, roots, placement and phase relations affect the reading; equal counts do not prove equal strength. The source’s working balance is a condition to explain, not a success rate.
The appended Ding-Wei Broken-Foot Bird account is not a seventh day in the main set. Its livestock, health and offspring claims are not predictions about the reader. Focus on Fire’s support and the actual sources of Wealth and authority.
