Fortune and Elegance: Fifteen Day Pillars and Five Different Metal Relationships
Fortune and Elegance discusses fifteen combinations of Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin or Gui with Si, You or Chou, focusing on the Metal relation. Metal has a different role for each Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference). This is neither more-Metal-is-better nor the separate Virtue-and-Talent Nobleman marker.
How do the fifteen days form five routes?
Each Yin stem has three listed Day Pillars. Geng and Xin are separated rather than assigning all Metal one Ten God (one of ten traditional relationship labels defined relative to the birth-day element): for Yi, Geng is Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) while Xin is Killings.
| Day Master | Three Day Pillars | Geng role | Xin role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yi | Yi-Si (乙巳), Yi-You (乙酉), Yi-Chou (乙丑) | Officer | Killings |
| Ding | Ding-Si (丁巳), Ding-You (丁酉), Ding-Chou (丁丑) | Direct Wealth | Indirect Wealth |
| Ji | Ji-Si (己巳), Ji-You (己酉), Ji-Chou (己丑) | Hurting Officer | Eating God |
| Xin | Xin-Si (辛巳), Xin-You (辛酉), Xin-Chou (辛丑) | Rob Wealth | Peer |
| Gui | Gui-Si (癸巳), Gui-You (癸酉), Gui-Chou (癸丑) | Direct Resource | Indirect Resource |
Does Yi-You or Gui-Chou alone form a complete Metal trine?
No. Si, You and Chou are three different branches, and repetition of one does not supply the others. Si contains Bing/Wu/Geng and Chou Ji/Gui/Xin; membership of the Metal group does not turn every hidden stem (an additional element symbol traditionally assigned inside a lower chart symbol) into Metal.
The routes differ: Ding’s Metal Wealth can nourish Water authority, Ji’s Metal Output Water Wealth, Gui’s Metal Resource the self, and Xin receives same-phase support. Those relationships still require season, strength and actual contacts.
How do broad Fire/Water stages compare with stem-specific stages?
The passage speaks broadly of Fire dying in You and Water ending in Si. In a Yang-forward/Yin-reverse ten-stem table, Bing is at Death in You and Ren at Extinction in Si, but Ding is at Birth in You and Gui at Gestation in Si.
These are different reference frames. A broad phase statement should not be presented as a checked result for each Yin stem’s reverse sequence. State which convention is being used.
Is Fire equally unfavorable for all five routes?
No. Fire controlling needed Metal Resource is one question, but the Xin account also permits a separate Bing Officer reading, and the Yi account discusses controlling authority. One route’s Fire caution is not a universal prohibition for all five Day Masters.
Fortune and elegance are historical praise, not measurements of beauty, talent or morality. The useful material is the full-day table, precise Metal roles and reference distinctions, not promises of fortune or lifespan.
