Sequential Four Pillars: Ordered Positions versus Consecutive Pillars
Sequential Four Pillars (the chart’s four birth-time columns: year, month, day and hour) describes an orderly Year → Month → Day → Hour arrangement. The source places Hour after Day, Day after Month and Month after Year. It gives a direction but does not state that each pair must be immediately consecutive. Order and uninterrupted adjacency are different requirements.
How can the order of the four positions be displayed?
Numbering Jia-Zi as 1 gives the following synthetic example. Calendar pairings are compatible and numbers increase, but gaps remain. It illustrates one ordering convention, not a source example or a source-defined maximum gap.
| Position | Pillar | Cycle number |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Jia-Zi (甲子) | 1 |
| Month | Bing-Yin (丙寅) | 3 |
| Day | Ji-Si (己巳) | 6 |
| Hour | Geng-Wu (庚午) | 7 |
Does ordered mean four consecutive pillars or four consecutive stems?
The steps are 2, 3 and 1. Increasing order does not itself mean uninterrupted adjacency. Looking only at Jia/Bing/Ji/Geng also discards the branches and the order of complete pillars.
A stricter definition should state whether it requires one-step spacing, a single decade or permitted gaps. Those additions should not be presented as already specified by the original sentence.
What happens when the cycle returns from Gui-Hai to Jia-Zi?
Another synthetic, calendar-compatible example is Gui-Hai, Jia-Zi, Yi-Chou, Bing-Zi. Fixed numbers are 60, 1, 2, 13, while circular counting moves forward across the cycle boundary.
The same pillars can receive different ordering judgments under those conventions. The sentence does not settle cycle wrapping, so the chosen reading must be clear before a lower number is called backward.
What remains once the order is understood?
Keep the actual four positions and examine season, hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol), Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element) and interactions as well. An orderly arrangement is a local feature, not proof of elemental balance, an organized personality or an easy life.
The useful question is what ordered compares: complete pillars, stems, branches or places within a decade. That makes the description checkable instead of leaving it as a vague compliment.
