Life–Death Embrace: Opposite Life Stages at the Same Branch
Life–Death Embrace pairs the Yin and Yang stems of one element at a branch where one is at Birth and the other at Death. Si is Birth for Geng but Death for Xin because their life-stage sequences run in opposite directions. These are stage names, not statements that a person lives or will die.
What are the four pairs in the source?
Name both the reference stem and target branch. Saying Si is Birth or You is Death without the stem omits the input that determines the result.
| Same-element stems | Branch | Yang stage | Yin stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geng / Xin | Si | Geng: Birth | Xin: Death |
| Jia / Yi | Hai | Jia: Birth | Yi: Death |
| Ren / Gui | Mao | Ren: Death | Gui: Birth |
| Bing / Ding | You | Bing: Death | Ding: Birth |
How do the four source charts display those relationships?
All four examples pass Year/Month and Day/Hour pairing checks. Their Year and Day repeat the Yang stem, while Month and Hour repeat its Yin partner at the branch above. Specific birth dates have not been independently established.
| Source chart | Comparison |
|---|---|
| Geng-Chen (庚辰), Xin-Si (辛巳), Geng-Wu (庚午), Xin-Si (辛巳) | Month/Hour Si: Geng Birth, Xin Death |
| Jia-Xu (甲戌), Yi-Hai (乙亥), Jia-Zi (甲子), Yi-Hai (乙亥) | Month/Hour Hai: Jia Birth, Yi Death |
| Ren-Yin (壬寅), Gui-Mao (癸卯), Ren-Chen (壬辰), Gui-Mao (癸卯) | Month/Hour Mao: Ren Death, Gui Birth |
| Bing-Shen (丙申), Ding-You (丁酉), Bing-Xu (丙戌), Ding-You (丁酉) | Month/Hour You: Bing Death, Ding Birth |
Does the phrase Yang Death, Yin Birth cover every example?
It fits the last two pairs, while the first two reverse it. The detailed comparisons are more precise than that blanket phrase. The passage also does not give an Earth pair; adding one would not make it an original five-element list.
The practical benefit is being able to identify the reference behind a reported stage and understand differing labels for the same branch. The word Death supplies no evidence about health, death or longevity.
