Three–Five Sequential Union: Forward and Hanging Stem Sequences

Three–Five Sequential Union organizes stems through elemental generation. The text calls two like stems above one stem a forward arrangement, and one above two like stems a hanging arrangement. Above and below refer to positions that must be identified. Union in the name does not automatically mean a Five Combination.

How can the two arrangements be understood with simple examples?

These are local illustrations of the wording, not verbatim source charts or stems assigned to a verified birth. They show the count of like stems and the Wood-to-Fire direction only.

Hanging illustrationJia, Bing, DingTwo Fire stems belowWood above generates Fire below

Is this the same as Jia/Ji or Yi/Geng Five Combinations?

They are different conditions. Jia/Yi are both Wood but do not form a Five Combination; Jia/Bing generate from Wood to Fire but are not a Five Combination either. Same element, generation, polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang) and combination should remain distinct.

If a chart also has Jia/Ji or another combination, identify those positions and any transformation requirements separately. This name does not establish them.

Why does the dense passage not supply a complete combination table?

The forward and inverse strings run multiple stems together without enough explanation to settle every grouping and position. Modern punctuation alone cannot establish one complete three-stem, five-stem or overlapping-group rule.

This page therefore explains the two arrangements and their checkable generation relationships. Its illustrations are not claimed as complete qualifying conditions, and the name does not make any three or five stems sufficient.

What can you check in a reading using this name?

List the participating stems in their actual positions, identify the like pair and generating direction, and show any intervening stems. The source’s additional stage and Lu/support requirements also need specific evidence.

The arrangement can organize a traditional explanation, but textual order does not establish achievement. A label without an explained grouping gives the reader little to evaluate.
