Four Seasons Convergence: Five Pillar Pairs on Different Elemental Layers
Four Seasons Convergence links specified complete pillars with elemental gatherings at a branch. The five listed pairs and the following Shenbai Classic’s four directions do not fully coincide. Keep the source’s label, actual stem elements and complete-pillar Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) separate rather than borrowing between layers without explanation.
What are the five pairs, and which elemental layers do they contain?
The source label is retained while the two checkable elemental layers are listed independently. They do not always reproduce the same pair of elements.
| Complete pair | Source gathering | Stem elements | Nayin elements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia-Yin (甲寅), Bing-Yin (丙寅) | Wood/Fire | Wood/Fire | Water/Fire |
| Ding-Si (丁巳), Xin-Si (辛巳) | Metal/Fire | Fire/Metal | Earth/Metal |
| Geng-Shen (庚申), Jia-Shen (甲申) | Metal/Water | Metal/Wood | Wood/Water |
| Ren-Shen (壬申), Wu-Shen (戊申) | Water/Earth | Water/Earth | Metal/Earth |
| Gui-Hai (癸亥), Yi-Hai (乙亥) | Water/Wood | Water/Wood | Water/Fire |
Why is Geng-Shen / Jia-Shen called Metal–Water?
Geng is Metal and Jia Wood. Geng-Shen has Pomegranate Wood Nayin, while Jia-Shen has Spring Water. The stem layer is Metal/Wood and the Nayin layer Wood/Water, neither exactly Metal/Water.
Using Geng’s stem Metal with Jia-Shen’s Nayin Water is a mixed-layer explanation and should be identified as such. Shen also contains Geng/Ren/Wu, but the passage does not fully specify which layer determines every label.
Can the Shenbai Classic directions simply be merged with that list?
The cited directions are Metal/Water at Shen, Fire/Wood at Yin, Water/Wood at Hai and Fire/Earth at Si, with emphasis on Day/Hour. Fire/Earth at Si differs from the preceding Ding-Si/Xin-Si Metal/Fire label.
Seasonal support is an additional consideration. A pair sharing one branch does not itself establish birth in a favorable season; the actual Month remains separate.
Can every listed pair be assigned directly to Day and Hour?
With the first pillar as Day and second as Hour, Jia-Yin/Bing-Yin, Geng-Shen/Jia-Shen and Ren-Shen/Wu-Shen are compatible. Ding Day’s Si Hour is Yi-Si, not Xin-Si; Gui Day’s Hai Hour is Gui-Hai, not Yi-Hai.
The five meeting pairs therefore cannot all be relabeled Day/Hour pairs, and reversing them needs a fresh check. Historical imagery should be applied to actual pillars, not used to alter an Hour pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth hour).
