Brocade Bestowed: Twelve Day-Stem and Hour-Pillar Pairs
Brocade Bestowed specifies Day stems paired with Hour branches, such as Jia, Bing or Geng Day with Yin Hour. It compares those two positions, not any matching characters anywhere in a chart. Brocade refers to historical official dress; the correspondence does not establish a modern job or reward.
What complete Hour pillars follow from the four verse groups?
Day stems and Hour branches come from the verse. The final column derives the Hour stem (the upper symbol in the birth-hour column) by the standard hour rule for calendar compatibility; it is not another condition printed in the verse.
| Day stem | Hour branch | Compatible complete Hour |
|---|---|---|
| Jia | Yin | Bing-Yin (丙寅) |
| Bing | Yin | Geng-Yin (庚寅) |
| Geng | Yin | Wu-Yin (戊寅) |
| Bing | Si | Gui-Si (癸巳) |
| Geng | Si | Xin-Si (辛巳) |
| Ren | Si | Yi-Si (乙巳) |
| Geng | Shen | Jia-Shen (甲申) |
| Ren | Shen | Wu-Shen (戊申) |
| Jia | Shen | Ren-Shen (壬申) |
| Ren | Hai | Xin-Hai (辛亥) |
| Jia | Hai | Yi-Hai (乙亥) |
| Bing | Hai | Ji-Hai (己亥) |
Where do the two source examples fit?
Both use the Yin-Hour route and pass calendar-pair checks. In the second, Jia Year also appears among the named stems, but Bing Day is the relevant reference.
| Source chart | Day stem | Hour pillar | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ren-Shen (壬申), Ji-You (己酉), Jia-Chen (甲辰), Bing-Yin (丙寅) | Jia | Bing-Yin (丙寅) | Jia Day / Yin Hour |
| Jia-Shen (甲申), Yi-Hai (乙亥), Bing-Chen (丙辰), Geng-Yin (庚寅) | Bing | Geng-Yin (庚寅) | Bing Day / Yin Hour |
Is any Meng branch or any Yang Day stem sufficient?
No. Each Hour branch (the lower symbol in the birth-hour column) has specific Day stems. Ren Day/Yin Hour and Jia Day/Si Hour are absent from their respective groups. Wu is Yang but appears in none of the four Day-stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) groups.
Some compatible Hour stems are Yin, including Gui, Xin and Yi. Requiring a Yang Hour stem would add a condition the verse does not state.
What remains visible in the examples after a match is found?
Both examples have Shen Year clashing with Yin Hour; the second also has Hai Month combining with Yin Hour. Matching this Day/Hour rule does not remove those interactions.
The entry helps verify a specific named correspondence. It does not replace an explanation of the month, useful relations or real-life circumstances, and official-dress imagery does not guarantee a reward.
