Monthly Virtue Harmony: table, stem derivation and examples
Monthly Virtue Harmony (Yue De He, 月德合) is the combining partner of the month’s Monthly Virtue stem: Xin for Bing, Ding for Ren, Ji for Jia and Yi for Geng. Finding its target and establishing transformation are separate checks.
Where do the four Harmony targets come from?
Select the Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) row, read its Monthly Virtue stem, then take the other member of its stem combination. Jia–Ji, Yi–Geng, Bing–Xin and Ding–Ren each appear once; Wu–Gui has no Monthly Virtue row.
Search the visible pillar stems for the right-hand target. Ji 己 in the Wood row is an Earth stem; it must not be confused with the similar-looking Si 巳 branch.
| Month Branch group | Monthly Virtue | Harmony target |
|---|---|---|
| Yin / Wu 午 / Xu | Bing | Xin |
| Shen / Zi / Chen | Ren | Ding |
| Hai / Mao / Wei | Jia | Ji |
| Si / You / Chou | Geng | Yi |
A Mao month can contain Ji without Jia
Mao belongs to Hai–Mao–Wei, so Monthly Virtue is Jia and the Harmony target is Ji. With a Ji Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) and no visible Jia, the marker can be at the day without any actual Jia–Ji pair.
When both stems appear, positions, distance, season and competing stems matter. Target presence, interaction between stems and transformation into Earth are three different questions.
How does the name help explain a reading?
The historical name evokes accord with Virtue. Recognizing it helps distinguish an auxiliary marker from a claim about an actual stem interaction.
It cannot ensure a successful collaboration. To explore coordination or resources, examine the specific Ten-God relationships and the real situation. Clarify does not currently calculate Monthly Virtue Harmony.
