Advancement Spirit: four day pairs and the Jin Shen context
Advancement Spirit (Jin Shen, 进神) commonly names four BaZi day pairs: Jia-Zi, Ji-Mao, Jia-Wu and Ji-You. The imagery is forward movement or development. Checking the full Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) identifies the day label before any interpretation of progress.
Which four day pairs are listed?
Compare the two characters of the Day Pillar together. A matching Year Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-year column) and Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) cannot be assembled into a day, and not every Jia or Ji day belongs here.
Volume 2 of Sanming Tonghui discusses advancing, crossing, retreating and hidden states through four fifteen-day periods, each distinguishing twelve days from three. A four-name lookup is a simplified scope, not the complete historical period system.
| Order | Complete Day Pillar |
|---|---|
| 1 | Jia-Zi 甲子 |
| 2 | Ji-Mao 己卯 |
| 3 | Jia-Wu 甲午 |
| 4 | Ji-You 己酉 |
Why does Jia-Wu match while Jia-Yin does not?
A Jia-Wu day exactly matches the third entry. Jia-Yin shares the Jia stem but is absent from the four-day list. Jia-Wu in the Year Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth year) with Jia-Yin at the day is not a Jia-Wu Advancement day.
A fifteen-day period beginning with Ji-Mao is broader than its first day. When sources differ, first ask whether they classify four named days or a span in the sexagenary sequence.
How should advancing imagery be understood?
Advancing and retreating provide historical metaphors for development and obstruction. They explain the vocabulary rather than establishing a career trajectory. Liu Yao’s moving-line advancement rule uses different inputs again.
For checking a report, record the Day Pillar and the rule’s scope. A job application, new skill or project still depends on preparation and circumstances. Clarify does not currently calculate Advancement Spirit.
