Heavenly Official Noble: Officer-branch and xun-based definitions
Heavenly Official Noble (Tian Guan, 天官) borrows the language of the Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) star. One historical definition checks branches containing the Direct Officer (a traditional role associated with rules, responsibility and expectations); another uses a xun sequence and Heavenly Noble. Identifying the definition is essential to understanding a result.
The Officer-branch table in Xuan Ze Ji Yao
The Upper Part of Xuan Ze Ji Yao names its Heavenly-Stem Direct Officer rule Tian Guan Gui Ren. Begin with the Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column), identify its Direct Officer, then use the branches specified by that text. Do not expand the table to every branch that might hide the same stem.
The source concerns selecting times. Applying its table to natal pillars is an explanatory convention that must be identified; selected hours, natal positions and xun-based patterns are separate contexts.
| Day Stem | Direct Officer | Specified branches |
|---|---|---|
| Jia | Xin | You |
| Yi | Geng | Shen |
| Bing | Gui | Zi |
| Ding | Ren | Hai |
| Wu 戊 | Yi | Mao |
| Ji | Jia | Yin |
| Geng | Ding | Wu 午 |
| Xin | Bing | Si |
| Ren | Ji | Chou / Wei |
| Gui | Wu 戊 | Chen / Xu |
How is Jia with You different from Jia with Xin-Wei?
Jia’s Direct Officer is Xin, the main hidden stem (an additional element symbol traditionally assigned inside a lower chart symbol) of You, so Jia with You is a branch-table match. Xu also hides Xin but is not an additional Jia target in this particular table.
A separate Tian Guan entry collected in Gujin Tushu Jicheng gives Jia with Xin-Wei through a xun sequence: Xin is the Officer and Wei a Jia Heavenly Noble location. The xun and derived stem matter; a lone Wei branch or Xin stem is insufficient.
Officer, Heavenly Noble and Heavenly Official describe different layers
Direct Officer is a Ten-God relationship between stems. Heavenly Noble is a branch lookup. Heavenly Official is a condition defined by a particular source. Similar names do not make them interchangeable.
Official language evokes office, order and responsibility historically. It helps identify the rule a report is using, but does not establish a position, credential or promotion. Clarify does not currently calculate Heavenly Official Noble.
