Heavenly Virtue Noble: full month table, origin and examples
Heavenly Virtue Noble (Tian De, 天德) is a traditional marker derived from the birth month. Virtue evokes benefit and moderation. The calculation selects a symbol from the Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) and checks where it occurs; it does not begin with a personality type.
How do all twelve months map?
The branch-substitution convention uses Shen, Hai, Yin and Si for Mao, Wu, You and Zi months. The final column preserves the four trigram directions in Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu, volume 5. A trigram is neither a hidden stem (an additional element symbol traditionally assigned inside a lower chart symbol) nor automatically the same thing as a branch.
For the branch convention, find stem targets among the visible pillar stems and branch targets among the pillar branches. Use the chart’s solar-term (one of 24 seasonal markers defined by the Sun’s position along its yearly path) Month Branch, not the number of a Gregorian month.
| Month Branch | Branch-convention target | Type | Volume 5 notation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yin | Ding | Stem | Ding |
| Mao | Shen | Branch | Kun (trigram) |
| Chen | Ren | Stem | Ren |
| Si | Xin | Stem | Xin |
| Wu 午 | Hai | Branch | Qian (trigram) |
| Wei | Jia | Stem | Jia |
| Shen | Gui | Stem | Gui |
| You | Yin | Branch | Gen (trigram) |
| Xu | Bing | Stem | Bing |
| Hai | Yi | Stem | Yi |
| Zi | Si | Branch | Xun (trigram) |
| Chou | Geng | Stem | Geng |
Yin with Ding and Mao with Shen require different searches
In a Yin month, Ding is the target. A Ding Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) gives a visible match at the day. Ding hidden inside Wei, with no visible Ding stem, does not satisfy this guide’s visible-stem scope.
In a Mao month, the branch convention searches for Shen. A Geng Month Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-month column) cannot substitute simply because both relate to Metal. A Shen Year Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-year column) is an actual match. A trigram-based reading would explain Kun separately.
Why do the texts call it Virtue?
The historical discussion connects Heavenly Virtue with celestial order, direction and the month, giving it a moderating or supportive symbolism. Volume 5 preserves disagreements over trigrams, growth branches and storage branches for the cardinal months.
The useful first result is a checkable reference and location. Then examine the target’s phase, Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element) and season. A Virtue label does not remove an existing chart contact or guarantee help in life. Clarify does not currently calculate Tian De.
