Metal Spirit in BaZi: three Hour Pillars and the Jin Shen pattern
Metal Spirit (Jin Shen, 金神) in traditional BaZi pattern discussion focuses on Jia days with Gui-You, Ji-Si or Yi-Chou Hour Pillars, followed by seasonal and whole-chart conditions involving Fire and other phases. It does not simply mean abundant Metal or a forceful personality. Day-Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) scope, the complete hour and pattern interpretation are separate checks.
The three hours require both stem and branch
The Sanming Tonghui Metal Spirit passage collected in the Arts section, volume 607 of Gujin Tushu Jicheng, lists Gui-You, Ji-Si and Yi-Chou, primarily for the six Jia days. Six Jia days means the six sexagenary days whose stem is Jia, not a month or age.
Gui and You must belong to the same Hour Pillar, as must Ji and Si or Yi and Chou. A Gui Month Stem and You Year Branch do not form a Gui-You hour.
| Candidate Hour Pillar | Hour Stem | Hour Branch |
|---|---|---|
| Gui-You 癸酉 | Gui | You |
| Ji-Si 己巳 | Ji | Si |
| Yi-Chou 乙丑 | Yi | Chou |
How does a Jia day produce Yi-Chou, Ji-Si and Gui-You hours?
Under the Five Rats hour-stem (the upper symbol in the birth-hour column) rule, a Jia day begins with Jia-Zi. Advancing one branch also advances one stem: Jia-Zi, Yi-Chou, Bing-Yin, Ding-Mao, Wu-Chen, Ji-Si, continuing to Gui-You. The three candidates can be checked directly from that sequence.
An Yi day begins with Bing-Zi instead, giving Ding-Chou, Xin-Si and Yi-You at those branches. Chou, Si and You still occur as hour branches, but the complete pillars differ and do not satisfy the Jia-day three-hour rule above.
Why is a matching hour not enough to establish the pattern?
The passage discusses Month Command, Fire configurations, Wealth, Officer and Resource, and switches to other pattern readings under different conditions. The three hours are an entry condition, not permission to skip season and the whole chart under a single phrase about Metal Spirit meeting Fire.
It also preserves a Ji-day version. Jia and Ji use the same hour-stem sequence under Five Rats, but that does not make their other pattern conditions identical. Specify the scope rather than expanding the rule to every Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) that sees these three branches.
Can Metal Spirit be checked without a birth hour?
Knowing only a Jia Day Stem cannot establish one of the three candidate hours. A documented range can be calculated as alternative Hour Pillars; an unknown time remains unknown. Interest in metal, decisiveness or a description that feels accurate cannot supply a missing hour.
Clarify currently calculates neither Metal Spirit nor its pattern. Learning the term clarifies the conditions of a classical pattern; it does not establish leadership, aggression, job suitability or success. An hour name cannot replace knowledge of actual behavior.
