Heavenly Turn and Earth Turn: seasonal day-pillar table and examples

Heavenly Turn (Tian Zhuan, 天转) and Earth Turn (Di Zhuan, 地转) compare a season with a complete Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day). In spring, Yi-Mao is Heavenly Turn and Xin-Mao is Earth Turn: sharing Mao is not enough. The table documented here comes from Liuren Da Quan, a Liuren source, rather than a universal rule implemented by every BaZi calculator.

The complete seasonal comparison

Choose the season row, then compare both Day-Pillar characters. Heavenly and Earth Turn share Mao, Wu 午, You and Zi as seasonal day branches, but use different stems. They are parallel conditions, not interchangeable names.

AutumnXin-You 辛酉Gui-You 癸酉
WinterRen-Zi 壬子Bing-Zi 丙子

Why does a spring Mao branch not establish Earth Turn?

Compare three Day Pillars in an already established spring season: Xin-Mao qualifies as Earth Turn, Yi-Mao as Heavenly Turn, and Ding-Mao as neither. Their branch is the same; their stems differ. Xin-Mao appearing only in the Year Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth year) does not meet this Day-Pillar condition.

Xin-Mao in autumn also does not match the autumn row. Seeing a character, matching a complete day, and matching its season are separate checks; the latter two cannot be omitted.

What needs checking near the beginning of a season?

A solar-term (one of 24 seasonal markers defined by the Sun’s position along its yearly path) convention commonly begins the seasons at Beginning of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. These are not civil-calendar quarters, and lunar month numbers cannot be substituted without explanation. Near a transition, the date, time, place and time zone affect the row selected.

Suppose an unresolved time range crosses Beginning of Summer while the Day Pillar is confirmed as Bing-Wu. The summer scenario meets Heavenly Turn and the spring scenario does not. Keep both until the input is resolved instead of choosing a season to obtain a label. This guide explains the table without silently adopting a calculation policy for an unimplemented marker.

What do the names contribute to reading?

The terms help identify a seasonal day category in an older text or another report, and show how vocabulary travels between traditions. To discuss seasonal strength in BaZi, examine Month Command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month), phases and the whole structure directly; the word Turn cannot replace that analysis.

Neither name establishes upheaval, relocation or an accident. Clarify currently emits neither label. Their absence is not a missing result from a supported feature, and a matching day does not require changing practical plans.
