Ten Evil Defeats: ten Day Pillars and the Lu–xun-void derivation
Ten Evil Defeats (Shi E Da Bai, 十恶大败) is a historical day category with an intimidating name. Its core rule asks whether the Day Stem’s Lu branch falls among the two branches omitted from the day’s ten-day xun. That calendrical relationship can be recalculated; it does not establish wrongdoing, bankruptcy or failure.
The ten days with their Lu branches and xun void
A xun contains ten consecutive stem-branch days. The ten stems complete a cycle, but only ten of twelve branches occur, leaving two called xun void. The table uses Lu positions Jia→Yin, Yi→Mao, Bing/Wu 戊→Si, Ding/Ji→Wu 午, Geng→Shen, Xin→You, Ren→Hai and Gui→Zi.
| Day Pillar | Xun starts at | Void branches | Stem Lu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia-Chen 甲辰 | Jia-Chen | Yin, Mao | Yin |
| Yi-Si 乙巳 | Jia-Chen | Yin, Mao | Mao |
| Bing-Shen 丙申 | Jia-Wu | Chen, Si | Si |
| Ding-Hai 丁亥 | Jia-Shen | Wu 午, Wei | Wu 午 |
| Wu-Xu 戊戌 | Jia-Wu | Chen, Si | Si |
| Ji-Chou 己丑 | Jia-Shen | Wu 午, Wei | Wu 午 |
| Geng-Chen 庚辰 | Jia-Xu | Shen, You | Shen |
| Xin-Si 辛巳 | Jia-Xu | Shen, You | You |
| Ren-Shen 壬申 | Jia-Zi | Xu, Hai | Hai |
| Gui-Hai 癸亥 | Jia-Yin | Zi, Chou | Zi |
Why does Jia-Chen qualify while Jia-Zi does not?
The Jia-Chen xun runs through ten branches from Chen to Chou, leaving Yin and Mao unused. Jia’s Lu is Yin, so Jia-Chen qualifies. The Jia-Zi xun omits Xu and Hai instead; Yin is not omitted and Jia-Zi does not qualify.
That does not mean every Jia-Chen chart lacks Yin. A Yin in the month or hour remains an actual chart branch. Xun void describes an omission within a ten-day cycle, not deletion of a symbol that is present. List membership and later Void interpretation are separate.
How should Yi-Chou spellings or additional conditions be checked?
The linked Sanming Tonghui transcription contains Yi-Chou in this passage. Under the Lu and xun rules above, Yi-Chou’s Lu Mao is not void, whereas Ji-Chou’s Lu Wu 午 is void in the Jia-Shen xun. This table therefore uses Ji-Chou according to the reproducible derivation and makes the transcription difference explicit.
The same entry also quotes a version with additional year-and-day conditions. The ten-day list is the core condition discussed here, not a claim that every historical extension has only one test. Check for an extra Year-Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth year) condition when results disagree.
Are Evil and Defeat judgments about a person?
The text borrows old legal and military language to convey adversity, while also qualifying a blanket negative reading. That interpretive vocabulary is not a measurement of criminality, creditworthiness, morality or success probability.
Clarify does not currently calculate Ten Evil Defeats. This guide helps verify a day category. Trustworthiness and practical financial or cooperation questions require actual conduct and records rather than the label.
