Lonely Phoenix: four-day and eight-day lists and relationship meaning
Lonely Phoenix (Gu Luan Sha, 孤鸾煞) is a traditional label for particular Day Pillars, often mentioned in relationship writing. Sanming Tonghui itself contains lists of different scope. Establishing which list a report uses is more useful than accepting an inevitable-marriage claim. The name has not identified anyone’s partner, relationship quality or future loss.
The four-day and eight-day scopes: what overlaps?
Volume 3 names Yi-Si, Ding-Si, Xin-Hai, Wu-Shen and Jia-Yin, then adds Bing-Wu, Wu-Wu and Ren-Zi. The relevant volume 12 commentary emphasizes Jia-Yin, Ding-Si, Wu-Shen and Xin-Hai. They are shown separately rather than treating the latter as the only complete list across all versions.
| Day Pillar | Volume 3 broad list | Named in this volume 12 passage |
|---|---|---|
| Yi-Si 乙巳 | Yes | Not named |
| Ding-Si 丁巳 | Yes | Yes |
| Xin-Hai 辛亥 | Yes | Yes |
| Wu-Shen 戊申 | Yes | Yes |
| Jia-Yin 甲寅 | Yes | Yes |
| Bing-Wu 丙午 | Yes | Not named |
| Wu-Wu 戊午 | Yes | Not named |
| Ren-Zi 壬子 | Yes | Not named |
Why might one report show Ding-Si but not Yi-Si?
Both Yi-Si and Ding-Si appear in the broad volume 3 list. A calculator limited to the four days emphasized in volume 12 includes Ding-Si but not Yi-Si. Bing-Wu likewise appears only in the broader list shown here. Identifying the version can explain the difference without changing birth details.
Also verify that the complete Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) is being checked. A Ding day with Mao is not Ding-Si. Ding-Si in the Year Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth year) does not make it a Ding-Si day, and characters from separate pillars cannot be joined to create one.
What do Lonely Phoenix, Gu Chen and the Spouse Palace each examine?
Lonely Phoenix here checks a complete Day Pillar. Gu Chen derives a target branch from the birth Year Branch’s seasonal group. The Spouse Palace is the Day Branch position itself. They can be mentioned together without sharing a formula.
With Ding-Si as the day, the Lonely Phoenix list can be checked and the Spouse Palace located at Si. Without the Year Branch, the Year-based Gu Chen lookup remains unresolved. The separate steps are not repeated evidence of relationship difficulty.
Can Lonely Phoenix or spouse-harm wording establish a relationship outcome?
Older texts attach marital fortune judgments to these dates within their period’s gender and family assumptions. A Day Pillar has not investigated two people’s relationship or supplied divorce, bereavement or fertility probabilities. Symbolic wording cannot become a fact that someone will harm a partner.
When a real relationship has a disagreement, examine expectations, behavior and choices. Checking the Lonely Phoenix list can clarify a report without defining whether someone deserves affection. Clarify currently does not calculate it, and documenting the term adds no such judgment to reports.
