Heavenly Net and Earthly Trap: Xu–Hai, Chen–Si and rule variants

Heavenly Net and Earthly Trap (Tian Luo Di Wang, 天罗地网) use a directional metaphor: Xu–Hai in the northwest and Chen–Si in the southeast. Simplified lookups check pair presence, while historical accounts add references, order and Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) conditions. The names are not evidence of real confinement.

What are the two basic pairs?

Identify both characters of each pair. One Xu, Hai, Chen or Si alone is not a complete pair, and a stem with the same element cannot replace a missing branch.

This table identifies the common pair-presence convention; it does not include every historical condition. Clarify does not currently calculate Heavenly Net or Earthly Trap.

Why are Xu, Zi, Chen and Wu not either complete pair?

Xu lacks Hai and Chen lacks Si, so neither pair is complete under a pair-presence rule. Two half-pairs do not add into a full Net and Trap.

Replace Zi with Hai and Xu–Hai is complete while Chen–Si remains incomplete. That establishes pair presence only; a historical version may still require a particular reference, Nayin or direction.

Which additional conditions do the texts discuss?

Sanming Tonghui distinguishes Chen with Si from Si with Chen and Xu with Hai from Hai with Xu. It also records Nayin contexts and historical male/female distinctions. Those cannot be reduced to a universal event rule from any two branches.

Zi Wei Dou Shu uses similar names within its own palace system. Identical words in a tool do not establish that it is calculating these BaZi branch pairs.

How can the net metaphor be read clearly?

It is one historical way to describe thresholds, constraint or entanglement. If a real situation feels blocked, examine resources, rules, time and communication instead of assuming the chart has trapped you.

The branches retain their normal hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) and contacts. Their label does not establish litigation, illness or harm to relatives, or justify restricting your choices.
