Academy Star and Literary Hall: Growth, Lin Guan and Nayin examples
Academy Star (Xue Tang, 学堂) evokes learning, while Literary Hall (Ci Guan, 词馆) evokes literary work and specialization. Classical discussion pairs Growth with Academy and Lin Guan with Literary Hall, sometimes requiring a matching Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) of the complete target pillar. Neither is simply another name for Wenchang.
Growth and Lin Guan: first identify the reference element
These are forward elemental positions, with Earth sharing Water’s positions in this passage. This is not the ten Day Stems’ Yin/Yang Life Stages table. Do not silently replace Earth’s Shen/Hai with Yin/Si from a Fire–Earth convention.
Under a year-Nayin reference, determine the complete Year Pillar’s Nayin element first. The ordinary element of the Year Stem or Day Stem is not a substitute.

Why does the Metal example use Xin-Si and Ren-Shen?
Sanming Tonghui illustrates Metal with Xin-Si: Si is Metal’s Growth branch and Xin-Si also has Metal Nayin. Its Literary Hall example is Ren-Shen: Shen is Metal’s Lin Guan branch and Ren-Shen again has Metal Nayin.
A Jia-Zi Year Pillar has Metal Nayin and can supply that reference convention. Ji-Si has the same Si branch but Wood Nayin, so it does not reproduce the full Xin-Si example merely by sharing Si.
Why do Day-Stem, Officer and Eating-God methods differ?
A Day-Stem Growth method starts from Jia, Yi and the other stems and may distinguish Yin/Yang direction. Nayin begins with a complete pillar. The source also describes Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands)-based positions and Eating-God examples such as Jia with Bing-Yin. Those references are not interchangeable.
Clarify does not currently calculate Academy or Literary Hall. A separate Day-Stem-to-pillar list should not be described as an enabled product rule. This guide focuses on the located source methods and its Metal examples.
What do the names offer a learner or writer?
The names place learning environments, accumulated knowledge and literary specialization into traditional imagery. Useful questions concern access to resources, effective practice, feedback and work that demonstrates understanding.
Experience and action answer those questions. Two learning markers do not double ability, and the absence of a marker does not limit education, research or creative work.
