Kui Gang in BaZi: four Day Pillars and the difference from a pattern
Kui Gang (魁罡) names four Day Pillars: Geng-Chen, Ren-Chen, Wu-Xu and Geng-Xu. Having one is a day classification. Reading the chart as a Kui Gang pattern is a further claim involving Month Command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month), Day-Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) strength and the rest of the chart. The name does not establish a dominant personality or a poor marriage.
How to check the four Kui Gang days
Find the Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) and compare its stem and branch as one unit. Jia-Chen and Bing-Chen share Chen but are not in this four-day list. Ren-Xu does not qualify merely because Ren and Xu each occur in other listed pairs. The combinations themselves are fixed.
| Day Pillar | Day Master | Day Branch |
|---|---|---|
| Geng-Chen 庚辰 | Geng Metal | Chen |
| Ren-Chen 壬辰 | Ren Water | Chen |
| Wu-Xu 戊戌 | Wu Earth | Xu |
| Geng-Xu 庚戌 | Geng Metal | Xu |
Why is a Kui Gang day different from a Kui Gang pattern?
Volume 6 of Sanming Tonghui lists the days, then discusses repetition, strength, clashes, Wealth and Officer conditions, with distinctions between the days. It also directs the reader to weigh Month Command and use a suitable main Wealth, Officer, Resource or Output structure instead of fixating on the label.
A report that jumps from a matching day to a formed Kui Gang pattern has skipped the main analysis. Ask which Month Command, which supporting stems and branches, and which pattern rule it uses. The name alone has not answered those questions.
A Geng-Chen example: what else is inside the Day Branch?
Chen in a Geng-Chen day hides Wu 戊, Yi and Gui. For Geng, these are Indirect Resource, Direct Wealth and Hurting Officer. The Kui Gang name therefore does not summarize everything in Chen; the wider chart shows whether these stems appear, become exposed or receive seasonal support.
Two Geng-Chen days can belong to different main structures when months and other pillars differ. An old biographical example cannot supply the outcome for everyone sharing that day, and forceful wording cannot replace knowing the person’s actual character.
Which part of a Kui Gang reading is worth clarifying?
First establish whether the statement means one of four days or proposes a complete pattern interpretation. The first is a lookup; the second needs additional reasoning. That distinction also explains why a calculator might display the marker while another does not use it as the main pattern.
Kui Gang cannot establish leadership ability, violence or partner suitability. Clarify currently does not calculate the marker. Learning the term helps interpret traditional texts and other reports, rather than score someone’s ability or relationships.
