Two Stems Unmixed: Alternating Stems and the Branches Beneath Them
Two Stems Unmixed refers here to alternating exposed stems, such as Jia–Wu–Jia–Wu. Both identity and order matter; any chart containing two stem names is not automatically the cited form. Branches still supply season, roots and other roles. Unmixed is not a character judgment or a claim of no conflicting relationships.
Why distinguish A-B-A-B from A-A-B-B?
Both the brief and full source examples alternate. Two Jia and two Wu give counts, not their order; Jia-Jia-Wu-Wu differs positionally from Jia-Wu-Jia-Wu.
| Stems from year to hour | Count | The cited alternating form |
|---|---|---|
| Jia, Wu, Jia, Wu | Two each | Matches |
| Jia, Jia, Wu, Wu | Two each | Not the alternating form |
| Geng, Wu, Geng, Wu | Two each | The full source example’s order |
Must the four branches all be Yin?
The source chart Geng-Yin, Wu-Yin, Geng-Yin, Wu-Yin has four Yin branches and compatible calendar pairs. But the preceding Jia/Wu illustration does not require four Yin, so that is an additional feature of the full example.
The synthetic comparison Jia-Zi, Wu-Chen, Jia-Yin, Wu-Chen also has compatible pairs and alternating Jia/Wu stems, with different branches. It illustrates the arrangement, not a verified birth date or every pattern condition.
Do alternating Geng/Wu and Jia/Wu mean the same thing?
No. Wu is Geng’s Indirect Resource (a traditional role associated with specialized learning and unconventional insight) through Earth producing Metal, but Jia’s Indirect Wealth (a traditional role associated with opportunities, exchange and wider connections) through Wood controlling Earth. The same alternating shape can carry different roles.
In the source chart, Yin also contains Jia Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands), Bing Killings and Wu Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) relative to Geng. Two exposed stem identities do not mean only Metal/Earth or an absence of Wealth and Killings.
Does the arrangement decide whether a chart is favorable?
It first establishes an arrangement. Season, roots, hidden contents and changing timing relations remain to be explained. Being discussed beside stem chains and branch enclosure does not make those methods interchangeable.
A tidy pattern alone does not establish wealth, purity or freedom from competition. Use this entry to check order, distinguish exposed and hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol), and identify the actual relationship between the two stems.
