Three Terraces Arching the Throne: Nayin and Layered References
Three Terraces Arching the Throne is explicitly introduced as a Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) method in Sanming Tonghui. It links Nayin phases, a stem-combination phase and nobleman-branch harmony. Its courtly image does not mean any three favorable stars surround an imperial seat.
Separate Jia-Yin, Ji-Hai and Jia–Ji Earth
Jia-Yin has Great Stream Water Nayin, while Ji-Hai has Flatland Wood. Jia–Ji Earth comes from the separate stem-combination system. Jia itself remains Wood; the true-Earth wording does not change a Jia Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) into Earth.
| Object | System | Content in this example |
|---|---|---|
| 甲寅 | Sexagenary Nayin | Great Stream Water |
| 己亥 | Sexagenary Nayin | Flatland Wood |
| 甲 with 己 | Stem-combination phase | Earth reference, not proven transformation |
| Jia uses Chou; Ji uses Zi | Selected nobleman branches | Zi–Chou is a harmony pair |
Why are the two authority layers not an ordinary Ten God lookup?
The passage first uses Jia–Ji Earth to control Jia-Yin’s Water Nayin, then Ji-Hai’s Wood Nayin to control that Earth. Those are two control relations across systems, not the single-reference Jia–Xin Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) lookup.
Jia using Chou and Ji using Zi belongs to the nobleman layer. The common Tian Yi table also gives Wei for Jia and Shen for Ji. Selecting Zi–Chou for this example does not leave each stem with only one nobleman branch.
Where do the starting phase and day/hour wording differ?
The Siku text starts with a Fire person, while Gujin Tushu Jicheng says Water person. Jia-Yin Water, Ji-Hai Wood and the two control links are checkable, but the unresolved starting reference should not become a universal rule. Geng-Yin with Yi-Hai is another short example, with Pine/Cypress Wood and Mountain-Top Fire Nayin.
The day/hour wording also does not authorize Jia-Yin day with Ji-Hai hour: Hai hour on a Jia day is Yi-Hai. Clarify version and placement before constructing the full configuration; do not alter the hour merely to make the text fit.
How is this historical method useful to a reader?
It helps explain why older texts discuss one pair through several systems. Distinguishing Nayin, combination phases, nobleman branches and harmony prevents a Water Nayin label from becoming a Water Day Master by mistake.
The throne and terraces are historical imagery, not credentials. The short example establishes no leadership ability, political resources or promotion and should not be packaged as a certain personal outcome.
