Metal–Wood Arrangement: Two Yi-Wood Cases and Proportion
Metal–Wood Arrangement uses Metal controlling Wood to explore shaping and proportion. Wood can be imagined as growing material and Metal as a shaping tool. That image requires suitable restraint; it does not make all control beneficial or two of each phase automatically balanced.
Why do roots matter when Yi meets two Geng stems?
The first case is 己巳 庚午 乙卯 庚辰. Yi sits on Mao, which contains Yi and provides a clear root. Both Month and Hour Geng are Direct Officer (a traditional role associated with rules, responsibility and expectations) for Yi, giving the source its Metal–Wood arrangement.
Yi also participates in the Yi–Geng stem-combination relation. One Yi facing two Geng raises competing-combination questions, not two successful transformations into Metal. The Wu-month season, Mao root and remaining hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) still matter.
Which relations need separating in the Yi-You case?
The second case is 庚申 戊子 乙酉 甲申. Zi contains Gui Indirect Resource for Yi. Shen contains Geng Officer, Ren Direct Resource and Wu Direct Wealth, while You contains Xin Killings. These Metal roles differ, and Jia Rob Wealth also remains present.
The passage uses both Yi–Geng transformation language and later support for the self. A transformation pattern requires its own seasonal, root and obstruction review. Yi plus Geng is insufficient. Shen and Zi are only two members of the Water trine here; Chen is absent.
Why can equal counts still produce different readings?
A seasonally supported, rooted Geng does not have the same role as an unsupported or entangled Geng merely because each counts as one character. Yi’s roots, Water support and Fire restraint change the relation.
| Comparison | Concrete question |
|---|---|
| Roots | Does Yi have an actual root, such as Mao? |
| Season | What support do Metal and Wood receive from the month? |
| Control and generation | Are Fire restraint and Water support effective? |
| Combination conditions | Is this a contact or an established transformation? |
How can the shaping metaphor be used meaningfully?
The metaphor can prompt reflection on useful feedback versus draining pressure: are expectations clear, resources sufficient and personal judgment respected? Those are reflective questions, not abilities measured by a chart.
A historical official’s example does not validate a management style or justify humiliation, control or harm. A helpful structure should support growth rather than demand that everything be endured in the name of refinement.
