Solitary Star and Gua Su: lookup table and relationship meaning

Solitary Star (Gu Chen, 孤辰) and Gua Su (寡宿, often translated as Loneliness or Widow Star) are paired markers derived from the birth Year Branch’s seasonal group. Gu Chen targets Yin, Si, Shen or Hai; Gua Su targets Xu, Chou, Chen or Wei. Their historical names do not establish that someone must be single, lonely or bereaved.

The complete Year-Branch table

This table uses four consecutive seasonal groups, not trines such as Shen–Zi–Chen. Find the row containing the birth Year Branch, derive each target, and look for it among the known pillar branches.

Both targets can be identified without limiting Gu Chen to men or Gua Su to women. Historical gender-specific judgments are a separate interpretive layer, not a measure of anyone’s ability to form relationships.

Shen, You, XuHaiWei

Why do the targets sit outside the seasonal group?

For Hai–Zi–Chou, move past Chou and the next branch is Yin: Gu Chen. Step back from Hai and the previous branch is Xu: Gua Su. The same procedure works for the other three groups. One target begins the following season; the other is the storage branch ending the preceding season.

Sanming Tonghui explains the arrangement through seasonal transitions and corner positions, and also preserves exceptions involving connected or combined configurations. Reducing it to inevitable loneliness loses both the positional explanation and the source’s qualifications.

Does a Zi year with Yin but no Xu contain both markers?

Suppose a lookup illustration has Year Zi, Month Yin, Day Mao and Hour Wu 午. Zi’s group targets Yin for Gu Chen, found at the month. Gua Su requires Xu, which is absent. The accurate note is that Year-derived Gu Chen appears in the Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column); Gua Su is not automatically added.

Replacing the Hour Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-hour column) with Xu would give both targets. That adds a symbolic match, not a measured amount of relationship difficulty. If the birth time is unknown, leave the Hour Branch and any possible match there unresolved.

How should solitude, being single and relationship difficulty be separated?

Enjoying time alone, choosing to remain single, and wanting closeness while lacking support are different experiences. A Year-Branch table has not asked about them and cannot choose one for the reader, predict widowhood or childlessness, or diagnose a psychological condition.

If a report uses the pair in a relationship discussion, ask which pillar it means and what actual issue needs discussion. Wanting private time can be expressed directly; needing support can be described specifically. Those answers belong to the person. Clarify does not currently calculate either marker.
