Travelling Horse: four-group table, movement and timing layers
Travelling Horse (Yi Ma, 驿马) borrows the image of relay travel to suggest movement, exchange and changing environments. A Year or Day Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-day column) group selects Yin, Shen, Hai or Si. Presence does not require overseas travel, and absence does not prevent a move.
Why are Horse targets among Yin, Shen, Si and Hai?
A useful positional explanation takes the opposite of the group element’s growth branch: Shen to Yin for Water, Yin to Shen for Fire, Si to Hai for Metal and Hai to Si for Wood. Both ends appear below.
Clarify uses Year and Day Branch groups and searches known pillars, deduplicating repeated groups. The derivation uses an opposition without requiring the growth branch to be present in the chart.
| Reference group | Element’s growth branch | Horse target |
|---|---|---|
| Shen / Zi / Chen | Shen | Yin |
| Yin / Wu 午 / Xu | Yin | Shen |
| Si / You / Chou | Si | Hai |
| Hai / Mao / Wei | Hai | Si |
For a Zi reference, how does natal Yin differ from annual Yin?
A Zi year selects Water and targets Yin. Yin at the natal month is already a natal position; the label does not specify a moving date.
If the known natal branches lack Yin and a discussed annual branch is Yin, the target appears at the annual layer. Do not insert that branch into the birth pillars, or treat an unknown hour as proof of natal absence.
Movement has more forms than going abroad
Its imagery can include commuting, working across regions, reassignment, travel or entering a new environment. Whether any of those occur depends on actual work, family or study arrangements.
To make the reflection useful, ask how much time, budget and support a change needs. Horse does not determine visas, admissions, transfers or the best place to live.
