What Does Illness (病, Bing) Mean in the Twelve Life Stages?
Illness is stage 7, after Decline and before Death. It describes qi contracting further after Decline, named through an illness metaphor. It is a lookup between a reference stem and target branch, not a permanent judgment about a person.
What does Illness establish first?
Illness here is a technical name, not a symptom, diagnosis, organ or medical record. The lookup returns only stage seven. Under the forward-Yang, reverse-Yin table used here, a reproducible result names both the reference stem and target branch. The word Illness by itself identifies neither the pillar nor the stem used.
It occupies position 7: the sequence moves from Decline into Illness and next into Death. That order explains the source metaphor; it is not a twelve-part biography.
At which branch does each stem reach Illness?
Choose the reference stem before reading its target branch. The ten complete results are 甲巳, 乙子, 丙申, 丁卯, 戊申, 己卯, 庚亥, 辛午, 壬寅, 癸酉. Yang and Yin stems move in opposite directions, so the same branch can hold different stages for different stems.
| Reference stem | Illness branch | Complete lookup pair |
|---|---|---|
Example: 甲巳 is Illness; what does Yi do at the same branch?
Using 甲 as reference and 巳 as target returns Illness. In a Star Fortune row, record “Day Stem 甲 → branch 巳 = Illness.” If 甲巳 is itself one pillar and the display checks self-sitting, it returns the same name through a different output layer.
Change the reference to 乙 while keeping branch 巳; the result becomes Bathing, not Illness. The branch therefore has no permanent Life-Stage name. A different reference can change the answer.
| Reference | Same target | Result | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 巳 | Illness | Forward Jia-Wood sequence |
| 乙 | 巳 | Bathing | Yi Wood begins Birth at 午 and runs in reverse |
How should Illness enter a whole-chart reading?
First identify whether the display is Star Fortune, which checks the Day Stem against four branches, or self-sitting, which checks each pillar stem against its own branch. Illness describes only that reference pair. Month Command, roots, hidden stems, Ten Gods, contacts and the pillar relevant to the question still require separate analysis.
No. The Twelve Life Stages (a symbolic cycle describing an element through twelve positions, not a person’s age) contain no clinical criteria and cannot identify an organ, condition, disability or lifespan. Real symptoms belong with qualified healthcare, without delay caused by this word. A reader can use Illness as supplementary language for where one relation sits in the cycle, never as an independent fortune score.
Which misunderstanding matters most for Illness?
Does an Illness stage reveal a physical or mental condition? No. The Twelve Life Stages contain no clinical criteria and cannot identify an organ, condition, disability or lifespan. Real symptoms belong with qualified healthcare, without delay caused by this word.
When two tools disagree about Illness, compare their reference stems, target branches and forward/reverse conventions, then confirm whether each row is Star Fortune or self-sitting. The Illness comparison is meaningful only after those inputs match.
