What Does Decline (衰, Shuai) Mean in the Twelve Life Stages?
Decline is stage 6, after Emperor and before Illness. It describes the first contraction after the local peak while the cycle continues. It is a lookup between a reference stem and target branch, not a permanent judgment about a person.
What does Decline establish first?
It marks movement away from Emperor; it does not mean an entire life is declining or that the Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) is weak. Under the forward-Yang, reverse-Yin table used here, a reproducible result names both the reference stem and target branch. The word Decline by itself identifies neither the pillar nor the stem used.
It occupies position 6: the sequence moves from Emperor into Decline and next into Illness. That order explains the source metaphor; it is not a twelve-part biography.
At which branch does each stem reach Decline?
Choose the reference stem before reading its target branch. The ten complete results are 甲辰, 乙丑, 丙未, 丁辰, 戊未, 己辰, 庚戌, 辛未, 壬丑, 癸戌. Yang and Yin stems move in opposite directions, so the same branch can hold different stages for different stems.
| Reference stem | Decline branch | Complete lookup pair |
|---|---|---|
Example: 甲辰 is Decline; what does Yi do at the same branch?
Using 甲 as reference and 辰 as target returns Decline. In a Star Fortune row, record “Day Stem 甲 → branch 辰 = Decline.” If 甲辰 is itself one pillar and the display checks self-sitting, it returns the same name through a different output layer.
Change the reference to 乙 while keeping branch 辰; the result becomes Crowning, not Decline. The branch therefore has no permanent Life-Stage name. A different reference can change the answer.
| Reference | Same target | Result | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 辰 | Decline | Forward Jia-Wood sequence |
| 乙 | 辰 | Crowning | Yi Wood begins Birth at 午 and runs in reverse |
How should Decline enter a whole-chart reading?
First identify whether the display is Star Fortune, which checks the Day Stem against four branches, or self-sitting, which checks each pillar stem against its own branch. Decline describes only that reference pair. Month Command, roots, hidden stems, Ten Gods, contacts and the pillar relevant to the question still require separate analysis.
No. The word names one stem's position relative to one branch. Changes in age, work, relationships or health require their own evidence and cannot be translated from one cycle label. A reader can use Decline as supplementary language for where one relation sits in the cycle, never as an independent fortune score.
Which misunderstanding matters most for Decline?
Does Decline mean aging, failure or falling fortune? No. The word names one stem's position relative to one branch. Changes in age, work, relationships or health require their own evidence and cannot be translated from one cycle label.
When two tools disagree about Decline, compare their reference stems, target branches and forward/reverse conventions, then confirm whether each row is Star Fortune or self-sitting. The Decline comparison is meaningful only after those inputs match.
