BAZI KNOWLEDGE BASE
What Does Birth (長生, Changsheng) Mean in the Twelve Life Stages?
Birth is stage 1, after Nurture and before Bathing. It describes qi first becoming manifest and beginning to grow. It is a lookup between a reference stem and target branch, not a permanent judgment about a person.
What does Birth establish first?
It identifies a stem at the manifest beginning of the cycle; it does not make a person young, long-lived or destined for a new opportunity. Under the forward-Yang, reverse-Yin table used here, a reproducible result names both the reference stem and target branch. The word Birth by itself identifies neither the pillar nor the stem used.
It occupies position 1: the sequence moves from Nurture into Birth and next into Bathing. That order explains the source metaphor; it is not a twelve-part biography.
At which branch does each stem reach Birth?
Choose the reference stem before reading its target branch. The ten complete results are 甲亥, 乙午, 丙寅, 丁酉, 戊寅, 己酉, 庚巳, 辛子, 壬申, 癸卯. Yang and Yin stems move in opposite directions, so the same branch can hold different stages for different stems.
| Reference stem | Birth branch | Complete lookup pair |
|---|---|---|
Example: 甲亥 is Birth; what does Yi do at the same branch?
Using 甲 as reference and 亥 as target returns Birth. In a Star Fortune row, record “Day Stem 甲 → branch 亥 = Birth.” If 甲亥 is itself one pillar and the display checks self-sitting, it returns the same name through a different output layer.
Change the reference to 乙 while keeping branch 亥; the result becomes Death, not Birth. The branch therefore has no permanent Life-Stage name. A different reference can change the answer.
| Reference | Same target | Result | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 亥 | Birth | Forward Jia-Wood sequence |
| 乙 | 亥 | Death | Yi Wood begins Birth at 午 and runs in reverse |
How should Birth enter a whole-chart reading?
First identify whether the display is Star Fortune, which checks the Day Stem against four branches, or self-sitting, which checks each pillar stem against its own branch. Birth describes only that reference pair. Month Command, roots, hidden stems, Ten Gods, contacts and the pillar relevant to the question still require separate analysis.
No. Sanming Tonghui warns that a generating or flourishing stage is not automatically favorable; excess, deficiency and regulation still matter. Birth only names stage one of this stem–branch lookup. A reader can use Birth as supplementary language for where one relation sits in the cycle, never as an independent fortune score.
Which misunderstanding matters most for Birth?
Does Birth automatically mean strong and favorable? No. Sanming Tonghui warns that a generating or flourishing stage is not automatically favorable; excess, deficiency and regulation still matter. Birth only names stage one of this stem–branch lookup.
When two tools disagree about Birth, compare their reference stems, target branches and forward/reverse conventions, then confirm whether each row is Star Fortune or self-sitting. The Birth comparison is meaningful only after those inputs match.
