BAZI KNOWLEDGE BASE
What Does Crowning (冠帶, Guandai) Mean in the Twelve Life Stages?
Crowning is stage 3, after Bathing and before Official. It describes form becoming established, like dressing before taking on a role. It is a lookup between a reference stem and target branch, not a permanent judgment about a person.
What does Crowning establish first?
It sits after Bathing and before Official, so the emphasis is becoming established rather than already holding office or reaching a peak. Under the forward-Yang, reverse-Yin table used here, a reproducible result names both the reference stem and target branch. The word Crowning by itself identifies neither the pillar nor the stem used.
It occupies position 3: the sequence moves from Bathing into Crowning and next into Official. That order explains the source metaphor; it is not a twelve-part biography.
At which branch does each stem reach Crowning?
Choose the reference stem before reading its target branch. The ten complete results are 甲丑, 乙辰, 丙辰, 丁未, 戊辰, 己未, 庚未, 辛戌, 壬戌, 癸丑. Yang and Yin stems move in opposite directions, so the same branch can hold different stages for different stems.
| Reference stem | Crowning branch | Complete lookup pair |
|---|---|---|
Example: 甲丑 is Crowning; what does Yi do at the same branch?
Using 甲 as reference and 丑 as target returns Crowning. In a Star Fortune row, record “Day Stem 甲 → branch 丑 = Crowning.” If 甲丑 is itself one pillar and the display checks self-sitting, it returns the same name through a different output layer.
Change the reference to 乙 while keeping branch 丑; the result becomes Decline, not Crowning. The branch therefore has no permanent Life-Stage name. A different reference can change the answer.
| Reference | Same target | Result | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 丑 | Crowning | Forward Jia-Wood sequence |
| 乙 | 丑 | Decline | Yi Wood begins Birth at 午 and runs in reverse |
How should Crowning enter a whole-chart reading?
First identify whether the display is Star Fortune, which checks the Day Stem against four branches, or self-sitting, which checks each pillar stem against its own branch. Crowning describes only that reference pair. Month Command, roots, hidden stems, Ten Gods, contacts and the pillar relevant to the question still require separate analysis.
No. Cap and belt are sequence metaphors. The lookup reads no qualification, etiquette, leadership skill or social recognition; real ability requires real evidence. A reader can use Crowning as supplementary language for where one relation sits in the cycle, never as an independent fortune score.
Which misunderstanding matters most for Crowning?
Can Crowning prove education, maturity or social status? No. Cap and belt are sequence metaphors. The lookup reads no qualification, etiquette, leadership skill or social recognition; real ability requires real evidence.
When two tools disagree about Crowning, compare their reference stems, target branches and forward/reverse conventions, then confirm whether each row is Star Fortune or self-sitting. The Crowning comparison is meaningful only after those inputs match.
