What Does Embryo (胎, Tai) Mean in the Twelve Life Stages?
Embryo is stage 11, after Extinction and before Nurture. It describes the first unseen formation after Extinction. It is a lookup between a reference stem and target branch, not a permanent judgment about a person.
What does Embryo establish first?
It is a qi metaphor, separate from the independently derived Fetal Origin pillar, and it does not represent an actual pregnancy or child. Under the forward-Yang, reverse-Yin table used here, a reproducible result names both the reference stem and target branch. The word Embryo by itself identifies neither the pillar nor the stem used.
It occupies position 11: the sequence moves from Extinction into Embryo and next into Nurture. That order explains the source metaphor; it is not a twelve-part biography.
At which branch does each stem reach Embryo?
Choose the reference stem before reading its target branch. The ten complete results are 甲酉, 乙申, 丙子, 丁亥, 戊子, 己亥, 庚卯, 辛寅, 壬午, 癸巳. Yang and Yin stems move in opposite directions, so the same branch can hold different stages for different stems.
| Reference stem | Embryo branch | Complete lookup pair |
|---|---|---|
Example: 甲酉 is Embryo; what does Yi do at the same branch?
Using 甲 as reference and 酉 as target returns Embryo. In a Star Fortune row, record “Day Stem 甲 → branch 酉 = Embryo.” If 甲酉 is itself one pillar and the display checks self-sitting, it returns the same name through a different output layer.
Change the reference to 乙 while keeping branch 酉; the result becomes Extinction, not Embryo. The branch therefore has no permanent Life-Stage name. A different reference can change the answer.
| Reference | Same target | Result | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 酉 | Embryo | Forward Jia-Wood sequence |
| 乙 | 酉 | Extinction | Yi Wood begins Birth at 午 and runs in reverse |
How should Embryo enter a whole-chart reading?
First identify whether the display is Star Fortune, which checks the Day Stem against four branches, or self-sitting, which checks each pillar stem against its own branch. Embryo describes only that reference pair. Month Command, roots, hidden stems, Ten Gods, contacts and the pillar relevant to the question still require separate analysis.
No. Embryo contains no reproductive medical data and cannot guarantee creative or project growth. Health questions belong with clinicians; projects require resources, planning and execution. A reader can use Embryo as supplementary language for where one relation sits in the cycle, never as an independent fortune score.
Which misunderstanding matters most for Embryo?
Can Embryo reveal pregnancy, fetal health, children or a new project? No. Embryo contains no reproductive medical data and cannot guarantee creative or project growth. Health questions belong with clinicians; projects require resources, planning and execution.
When two tools disagree about Embryo, compare their reference stems, target branches and forward/reverse conventions, then confirm whether each row is Star Fortune or self-sitting. The Embryo comparison is meaningful only after those inputs match.
