Strong Resource, weak Output and the mother–child metaphor
Strong Resource with weak Output describes a strong source of support and a comparatively weak Eating God or Hurting Officer side. It is not interchangeable with every use of strong mother, weak child. The parent metaphor needs an explicit generating relationship: in some passages the Day Master is the mother, while in others it is the child. Separating the three roles is clearer than treating one family image as a complete explanation.
Water, Wood and Fire have three different contacts
With Jia Wood as Day Master, Ren/Gui Water is Resource and Bing/Ding Fire Output. Water generating Wood is Resource supporting the Day Master; Wood generating Fire is the Day Master producing Output; Water controlling Fire is Resource restraining Output. Resource and Output are not adjacent parent and child in that generating chain: the Day Master is between them.
Strong Resource therefore does not automatically establish weak Output. Water restrains Fire but also generates Wood, which generates Fire. Roots, season and position affect which contacts participate. A strong-Resource/weak-Output finding needs evidence for both sides.
| Relationship | Jia example | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| Resource → Day Master | Water → Wood | Where support comes from |
| Day Master → Output | Wood → Fire | What generates Output |
| Resource restrains Output | Water controls Fire | Whether Output is restrained |
The classical reference can change between chapters
In the original note to the Mother chapter of Di Tian Sui Chan Wei, the Day Master is mother and its generated element child; abundant Wood with little Fire illustrates the relationship. The neighboring Child chapter instead calls the Day Master child and its generating element mother. The same words cannot be assigned fixed Ten God (one of ten traditional relationship labels defined relative to the birth-day element) identities outside their passage.
The point borrowed here is the reference relationship, not the historical outcome claims or family judgments. An explanation that calls Resource mother and Output child needs to identify its chosen role metaphor rather than claim that those two elements directly generate each other.
Weak Output needs its own explanation
Bing/Ding may lack roots, be out of season, face Water restraint or become bound. Limited Day Master support may also make more Output difficult to sustain within the model. These causes are not all excessive Resource, and few Fire symbols do not by themselves establish weak Fire.
The corresponding adjustments differ. More Water Resource may not address missing Fire roots; stronger Fire may add expenditure if the main issue is limited Wood support. Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) restraint of Resource, companion support and added Output describe different relationships, not one universal remedy.
The label describes neither your mother nor your ability
These terms should make a traditional diagram understandable, not encourage blame toward family or a belief that you lack talent. Weak Output does not establish poor expression, and strong Resource does not prove overprotection. Skills and support need to be understood from actual experience.
A clear explanation might say that Ren and Bing have a controlling relationship, while Bing’s seasonal and root evidence remains incomplete, so seizure or generally weak Output is not established. A bounded statement like that is more useful than a parent metaphor concealing missing information.
