Hurting Officer and Seven Killings: control or combination?
Hurting Officer (a traditional role associated with independent expression and questioning rules) controlling Seven Killings (a traditional role associated with challenge, pressure and decisive action) describes an element relationship in which Hurting Officer restrains the Killings element. Some actual stems also belong to the Five Stem Combinations, introducing a second question: does Hurting Officer bind Seven Killings? Separating control from combination makes clear whether a reading concerns relative strength or an interaction that redirects a role’s participation.
Find the two roles for your Day Master
Under the usual polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang) rules, these two stems do not form a Five Stem Combination for Yang Day Masters. For Yin Day Masters they do. This is a lookup result, not a finding that every Yin chart establishes a binding pattern. A yes in the table confirms pair membership only.
Jia’s Ding Hurting Officer and Geng Seven Killings have a Fire-controls-Metal relationship but no Ding–Geng combination. Yi’s Bing and Xin also have Fire controlling Metal, with the additional Bing–Xin pair. Changing the Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) changes the exact contacts to inspect.

Control asks about effective restraint
For Jia with Ding and Geng, ask whether Ding can restrain Geng effectively. Ding’s roots, season, Water restraint and Jia’s capacity to sustain Output (the role family produced by the birth-day element, often interpreted through expression and activity) all matter. Strong Hurting Officer with weak Killings is different from strong Killings with weak Hurting Officer.
Eating God (a traditional role associated with creativity, expression and enjoyment) can control Killings, so Hurting Officer is identical skips relevant distinctions. Both belong to the Output element, but polarity, exact stem combinations and pattern functions can differ. Excessive and insufficient restraint cannot be resolved by adding a favorable label.
Combination changes the inquiry, not the printed symbols
Yi’s Bing–Xin, Ding’s Wu–Gui, Ji’s Geng–Yi, Xin’s Ren–Ding and Gui’s Jia–Ji are the relevant pairs. A binding reading considers contact, intervening symbols, competing combinations and the remaining roots or activity of the bound role.
Combining away Seven Killings is traditional shorthand for an interpreted change of function. It does not erase a stem or its branch roots. Binding is also different from transformation into another element. Recounting Bing and Xin as Water requires separate transformation reasoning beyond pair membership.
The same Bing–Xin pair can involve different roles
For Jia, Bing is Eating God and Xin Direct Officer (a traditional role associated with rules, responsibility and expectations). For Yi, Bing is Hurting Officer and Xin Seven Killings. The same Bing–Xin pairing can therefore be discussed as binding Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) in the former case and binding Killings in the latter. The pair stays fixed; its roles relative to the Day Master change.
The original Ziping Zhenquan discusses retaining Killings after an Officer combination. Xu Lewu’s commentary also questions wording about Eating God combining with Killings. The explanation here follows the actual role and pairing rules, rather than merging Output and Officer identities because of one transcribed phrase.
Why the distinction matters when reading a report
A common modern image for control is meeting demands through expression, insight or problem solving. Binding emphasizes an interaction that constrains or redirects participation. Neither guarantees mastery of every pressure, and neither identifies an actual person as your Seven Killings.
Three checks clarify the wording: establish the Day Master and roles, check whether the stems form a pair, and identify whether the explanation means restraint, binding or transformation. With those distinctions in place, the subsequent strength and pattern discussion becomes understandable.
