Qiongtong Baojian: Day Stems, Seasons and Climate Regulation
Qiongtong Baojian discusses selection by Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column) and seasonal month, emphasizing conditions expressed as cold, warmth, dryness and moisture. It asks why the same Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) may need different cooperation in different seasons. It is not a permanent lucky-element list obtained from a Gregorian birth month.
How do I find the relevant passage?
Identify the Day Stem and solar-term (one of 24 seasonal markers defined by the Sun’s position along its yearly path) Month Branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) first. The seasonal first and second months are not simply Gregorian January and February. Read the stem’s seasonal introduction and the conditions following the month paragraph.
Quoting only “use this stem first” omits its reason, alternatives and excess conditions. The month supplies a setting, not the entire chart.
Why do Jia’s Yin and Chen passages name different stems?
The cited text discusses residual early-spring cold and Bing/Gui for first-month Jia, then Geng followed by Ren in the third-month passage. These are separate seasonal discussions, not four stems every Jia chart always needs.
| Passage | Named cooperation | Roles for Jia |
|---|---|---|
| First-month Jia: Yin setting | Bing Fire and Gui Water | Eating God and Direct Resource |
| Third-month Jia: Chen setting | Geng Metal, then Ren Water | Seven Killings and Indirect Resource |
What if the named stem is absent or excessive?
Keep the actual facts. Ding shares Fire with Bing but is a different stem; hidden Bing is not exposed Bing. If a source permits substitution, identify its conditions.
Then assess whether the function is needed, rooted or obstructed. The text continues with excessive Water, Fire, Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) and other qualifications. Seasonal regulation is not repeatedly adding an element without regard to the chart.
Can it differ from a pattern-based Useful God?
It can, because the questions differ. Seasonal regulation addresses seasonal needs, while pattern selection begins with the month’s role for the self. The same Fire may be discussed for warmth, Output (the role family produced by the birth-day element, often interpreted through expression and activity) or Metal control.
Compare objectives and premises. Listing every element mentioned by different books as favorable, or imposing a simple ranking, skips their actual cooperation in the chart.
Does the book’s cold/warm language describe my body?
It is traditional seasonal language, not body temperature, constitution testing or a medical examination. It can explain a report’s seasonal reasoning, but cannot diagnose illness or select supplements.
The useful reading question is how an element’s role changes with conditions, rather than adopting historical wealth, gender or health judgments about yourself.
