Lantai Miaoxuan: Reading Nayin Images and Named Configurations
Lantai Miaoxuan uses vivid names for stem-branch and Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) configurations. Dragons, phoenixes, swords and celestial rivers often correspond to particular branches or sexagenary pillars rather than free-form personality metaphors. Translate the image into its actual members, then check position, order and qualifications.
Does image reading mean guessing from a name?
No. The cited upper section develops Nayin and branch images while also discussing the month and roles; it is not merely one Nayin table. Read each name through its own note.
The sword of Ren-Shen/Gui-You comes from Sword Metal Nayin, not the appearance of their Water stems. Bing-Wu/Ding-Wei’s Celestial River Water likewise refers to whole-pillar Nayin despite their Fire stems.
What does “Sword qi reaching the Ox/Dipper” actually look for?
The cited note starts with a Ren-Shen day encountering Chou, then discusses Gui-You Sword Metal as well and distinguishes the stem above Chou. These are member distinctions in that text, not a complete-chart qualification.
| Member | Role in the cited explanation |
|---|---|
| Ren-Shen and Gui-You | Sword Metal provides the sword image |
| Yi-Chou | The specifically preferred example; Sea Metal Nayin |
| Gui-Chou | Mulberry Wood Nayin, given a separate scabbard image |
| Ji-Chou and Ding-Chou | Not treated as the same qualifying example in that note |
Does the word “reaching/clashing” imply a Six Clash?
Not necessarily. Here it is part of the image: neither Shen–Chou nor You–Chou is a Six Clash pair. The title cannot import Yin–Shen or Mao–You clash rules.
Likewise, decode dragon or phoenix names before checking actual combinations, trines or Nayin interactions. A figurative title does not establish a technical relation.
Why do direction and season matter?
The cited snake-to-dragon passage distinguishes Si meeting Chen from Chen meeting Si and adds seasonal qualification. The same members need not receive the same reading when reference and order change.
Do not combine the easiest conditions from several editions into a more permissive checklist. Keeping the actual passage visible shows which part of a rule has been satisfied.
What value do these old names offer a reader?
They show how traditional writers organized calendar symbols into images and explain names that seem inconsistent with a stem’s element. Specifying the members turns an ornate label into something intelligible.
Poetic appeal and rarity do not establish wealth, talent or events. Understanding a cultural term is separate from accepting its alleged power to determine outcomes.
