Balancing Useful Gods: support, Output, Wealth or restraint?
Balancing selects relationships to adjust relative weakness or strength after assessing the Day Master’s actual support and expenditure. Supporting weakness is more than adding matching symbols; restraining strength is more than finding a controlling element. Resource, companions, Output, Wealth and Officer/Killings each act differently and change other contacts in the chart.
Locate the source of weakness or strength
Jia in spring starts with seasonal Wood support, but heavy Metal and affected roots can change the whole-chart assessment. Autumn Jia may have Yin/Mao roots and Resource or companions elsewhere. Neither a month branch (the lower symbol in the birth-month column) nor a Wood count alone decides support versus restraint.
Strength is not personal competence or physical condition here. The model concerns support, expression and regulation. If birth time or the month remains uncertain, retain that limitation rather than supply a definitive favorable-element table.
Five directions for Jia Wood
The table identifies relationships; it does not select a Useful God (the element or role assigned a key function by a particular interpretation method) for a complete chart. Water generating Wood and Wood supporting Wood can both involve support, but Water also controls Fire and Wood controls Earth, giving different further effects.
| Direction | Jia reference | Further question |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | Water Resource → Wood | Does Resource restrain needed Fire Output? |
| Companion support | Jia/Yi support the Wood side | Does it add competition around Earth Wealth? |
| Output expenditure | Wood → Fire Output | Is Output rooted and adequately supported? |
| Wealth expenditure | Wood controls Earth Wealth | How strong is Wealth, and what does it generate or control? |
| Restraint | Metal Officer/Killings controls Wood | Is restraint appropriate and adequately regulated? |
Supporting weakness: Resource, companions and roots
If Jia lacks a Wood root, Ren generating Jia does not place a hidden Wood stem inside a branch that has none. If Jia is rooted but excessively expended by Fire, Water’s Wood generation and Fire restraint may both matter. Identify the gap before choosing Resource or companions.
Resource may interfere with Eating God (a traditional role associated with creativity, expression and enjoyment) controlling Killings, and companions may affect Wealth. Favoring Resource/companions for weakness is a common starting point, not a replacement for Output, Wealth, Officer and seasonal context. A root identified by both role and hidden stem (an additional element symbol traditionally assigned inside a lower chart symbol) is not two independent contributions.
Restraining strength: an outlet differs from added pressure
When Jia’s side has ample support, Fire Output offers an outlet and Metal Officer/Killings offers restraint. Fire generates Earth Wealth; Metal generates Water Resource, which can support Wood again. Follow these onward effects rather than treating all routes that reduce Wood as equivalent.
Earth Wealth is what Jia controls, traditionally described as expenditure. That does not make any amount of Earth manageable. Heavy Output, Wealth or Killings can create another imbalance. The objective is an appropriate relationship, not a fixed fifty-fifty split or the lowest possible Day Master strength.
When the simple balancing rule is insufficient
A configuration meeting a declared following or dominant-pattern rule needs an explanation for following its tendency instead of ordinary balancing. An extreme score does not establish either pattern. Climate is another question: winter Wood with Fire involves expenditure and warmth imagery, requiring both reasons to be stated.
The useful result explains which route fits, why, and what limits it. It does not naturally imply supplements, objects or a prescribed lifestyle; actual choices depend on actual circumstances.
