BaZi problem-and-remedy analysis: what is being corrected?

Problem-and-remedy analysis calls a specific obstruction in the chart a problem, or Bing, and the relationship that changes it a remedy, or Yao. These are not diagnoses or medicines. The method first identifies a disrupted function, then explains how another relationship might restore it. The same element can play opposite roles in different problems.

The metaphor begins with an identified obstruction

The problem-and-remedy chapter of Shenfeng Tongkao relates an obstructing natal factor to a factor that removes it, discussing different targets such as Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) and Output (the role family produced by the birth-day element, often interpreted through expression and activity). This page uses that problem-specific reasoning without adopting the historical claim that a problem is necessary for high status.

A problem may involve needed Output restrained by Resource, Wealth affected by excessive companions or a missing connection. Severe-sounding names such as Seven Killings or Hurting Officer do not themselves identify a problem; the disrupted function must be named.

Example one: Ren restraining Bing and a possible Earth response

Jia has Bing Eating God (a traditional role associated with creativity, expression and enjoyment) and Ren Indirect Resource (a traditional role associated with specialized learning and unconventional insight). Suppose Bing supplies needed Output while strong Ren restrains it. Earth Wealth controlling Water may be considered to limit Ren, provided Bing’s function should remain and Ren’s restraint is excessive.

Earth also generates Metal and is controlled by Wood; Ren supports Jia. Heavy Earth may damage needed Water support or generate excessive Killings. A proposed response can therefore reduce one problem while adding another. Appropriate does not mean more is always better.

Example two: restraining and mediating Killings differ

Geng Metal controls Jia Wood. Bing Eating God controlling Geng is direct restraint; Ren receiving generation from Geng and generating Jia is Metal → Water → Wood mediation. The former requires appropriate Bing restraint; the latter requires Ren to connect both ends.

These routes can interfere. Ren controls Bing, while Earth Wealth generates Geng and controls Ren. Eating God and Resource together do not establish two successful solutions to add up. Their support, positions and intended functions still need assessment.

A suitable response may not yet be available

If Earth might moderate Water but no effective Earth participates, the relationship remains unavailable. Hidden, exposed, rooted and obstructed are different states; a desired element cannot be inserted into the birth chart.

When timing supplies Earth, assess the whole incoming stem–branch relationship and its period. A later favorable event does not retrospectively prove Earth was the remedy or guarantee the same outcome next time.

The idea can explain a tradeoff without creating a defect

A reader can understand it as a traditional way to locate a bottleneck and compare responses, rather than discovering an inborn defect. If no relevant obstruction is established, there is no need to invent one to complete the terminology.

The language describes relationships inside the model. Physical symptoms, work difficulties and interpersonal conflict have their own causes and cannot be diagnosed or treated through these labels.
