BaZi mediation: the five element bridges and their conditions

Mediation introduces a generating link between two controlling elements. Metal controls Wood, but Metal generates Water and Water generates Wood, making Water a possible bridge. The controlling rule does not disappear, and three present elements do not establish successful mediation. The strength and connection of both ends and the intermediary give the route its meaning.

The five generating bridges

Each row starts with a controlling relationship and adds an intermediary to form two generating steps. These are element directions; a chart reading still needs exact Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element), roots and positions.

Jia’s Killings–Resource route illustrates mediation

For Jia, Geng is Seven Killings and Ren Indirect Resource. Geng controls Jia, while Metal → Water → Wood gives Geng → Ren → Jia another route. This explains why a Killings configuration may consider Resource mediation instead of only Fire controlling Metal.

Ren must participate. Rootless Ren under heavy Earth restraint, or a disconnected position, does not establish mediation merely because three arrows can be drawn. The mediation chapter of Di Tian Sui Chan Wei discusses exposure, hidden roles, separation and obstruction in Killings–Resource relationships.

Wealth and Resource can pose another mediation question

For Jia, Earth Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) controls Water Resource, and Metal Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands)/Killings may provide Earth → Metal → Water. This differs from Wood companions directly restraining Earth to reduce its control of Resource: one mediates generation, the other restrains an endpoint.

Metal also controls Jia, while Earth and Water have other uses. Adding an intermediary is not automatically an improvement. If excessive Resource needs restraint, a bridge feeding Resource may oppose the original goal. Establish why mediation is needed before praising the connection.

Absent, obstructed and period-specific bridges differ

No natal Water means a possible Water function may be sought between Metal and Wood, not that mediation already exists. Present but obstructed Water is a different problem. Water introduced by timing needs its roots and additional contacts checked, with any role scoped to that period.

Transformation through mediation means redirecting through generation, not a Five Stem Combination becoming another element. Nor does this table replace Six Harmonies, Three Harmonies or clash-resolution rules; those have their own participants and conditions.

Connection is a useful image, not a promise of reconciliation

Turning a requirement into a workable method is a modern analogy for an intermediary. Water in a chart does not establish a talent for diplomacy or guarantee that two people reconcile.

What the reader gains is an explicit route: which endpoints control one another, why an intermediary is needed, where it comes from and which connection is missing. That explains more than a vague promise of a helpful mediator.
